Apparently, Jay-z has signed on with LiveNation for meal ticket.
Two quotes sum up this whole thing to me.
The overall package for Jay-Z also includes an upfront payment of $25 million, a general advance of $25 million that includes fees for his current tour, and advance payment of $10 million an album for a minimum of three albums during the deal’s 10-year term, these people said. A series of other payments adding up to about $20 million is included in exchange for certain publishing, licensing and other rights. Jay-Z said Live Nation’s consolidated approach was in sync with the emerging potential “to reach the consumer in so many different ways right now.” He added: “Everyone’s trying to figure it out. I want to be on the front lines in that fight.”
“I’ve turned into the Rolling Stones of hip-hop,” Jay-Z said in a recent telephone interview.
Completely random thoughts after reading this…
– Breaking the mold, Jay did what we’ve been saying for years – artists should aim to tour & get that real money from doing shows & tours. In it’s essence, Jay aligned himself with a concert promoter, and not another major record label, to move himself as a product & all things Jay-z. Question one is…
– …Can it be successful?
That will be seen. But if you’ve tried to buy tickets for his current tour with MJB or noticed the eBay prices, you will definitely see that a demand is there.
– The question is can one of hip-hop’s biggest names make the move from being a big-selling studio artists to being a big-name touring draw. Other genres have theirs but hip-hop doesn’t exactly have a top-tier artist who owns the road. Yes, groups like LB & The Roots tour constantly but I wouldn’t call them our top-tier & the crowds aren’t on the level of other genres touring bands – EW&F, Zeppelin, The Stones, etc.
And Parrotheads.
I’ve literally seen these fans form a car line over eight miles, starting @ roughly 3pm…for a 9pm show.
Not to say he will cultivate that type of following, but if any artist(s) could, I’d place a wager on Hov. Hey, he hasn’t lost @ too many things yet.
– It was help cure Jay’s restless leg syndrome. He’s seemingly never content with being stagnant artistically and perhaps not best suited for a desk job. With this, he could satisfy his jones to make music, relive his older music & to write checks as well because…
– “As part of the arrangement, Live Nation would finance the start-up of a venture that would be an umbrella for his outside projects, which are expected to include his own label, music publishing, and talent consulting and managing.”
Thank god they’ve included “talent consulting” but I digress.
In other words, Jay got his own label. Without Dame. Without Lyor. Without a major label backing him. And without removing a dime from his pocket. Not that it matters because…
– …Even if the shit flops miserably…Shawn Corey got $25 mil up front. Which I guess was…
– …Enough to push him to go ahead & pop the question, thus making an honest woman out of Yawnsay.
– Anybody want to guess what that last studio album for Def Jam might be?
For now, let us just take our hats off to Jay & sing along.

“I’m not a businessman….I’m a BUSINESS…..Man…”
the ATLiens Resurrection mix & that Bussa Bus shot are dope.
I think that right now, Jay is the only rapper with the fanbase and the clout to pull it off. He’s got a string of hits that stretch back a decade plus, more than a few classic albums, and he’s an artist who’s recognized by nearly everyone, regardless of race or age. He mat not be as big as the Stones yet, but that’s only because he’s about half their age.
@OED,
That “Don’t Touch Me” is the truth. I’m about to knock it on the way to class.
HOLA HOVITO

here’s the thing though, and I might be wrong…
Jimmy Buffett fans, Earth Wind & Fire fans, Stones fans, Led Zep fans…to me, their demographic consists of the baby-boomers with six-figure incomes who can afford to attend over-priced concerts…which could be justifiable, since their music is classic & timeless….
Sure, Jay’s catalog is unfuckwittable, but the type of music he does…15-20 years later on down the line…when our hair has thinned out and our faces gotten a little rounder…are we really gonna wanna pay $70-$150 to see Jay…? And are most of us even gonna have the disposable income to do so…?
I hear you on that Misfit. Our music is a little bit different, and attracts a “different” element, but I think Jay may be banking on that Starbucks/MTV Unplugged crowd to make up a large part of his following…
Still, no Jimmy Buffett, Stones, EWF, or Grateful Dead for that matter…. but with Hov, who knows?
Does anyone have a working link for Estelle?

Cool Breeze! Ah Shit, where the hell has that cat been?
People forget 50-55% of Jay’s fans are white folks. And i’m sure I’d drop a bill to see Jigga and MJB in concert when I’m 30 (8 years from now). I just kicked out $70 for the Glow IN the Dark tour. And Little Brother’s concert was only $12. That was a sweet deal.
You have to appauld his business sense; for the moment he can be hugely successfull as a touring artist. But due to the fickle nature of some hip hop fans, I dont think any Hip Hop artist will ever dominate touring as groups like The Stones. As a genre Rock N Roll fans are encouraged to grow as their bands grow. That’s why even in their 60′-70′s the Stones can still sell out arenas. Sadly Hip Hop doesn’t hold that same respect for their musical greats.

Yo, the stencils are banging. Good work.
LOL. i know, the hannah montana is on the list for my daughters too! I’ll let you know when i get to that one.
dope sh*t Complex…
I agree with Nonchalant but I feel the main reason no hiphop artist will ever dominate the road is because of the way we perceive age in our culture. I’ve noticed recently among certain fans that if an MC is 30 years of age and over they’re too “old” to be rapping and they get written off, which is understandable because people see hiphop as youth culture. Also, a lot of artists in the game right now have no staying power, plus throw into the mix the unloyal nature of most fans who only check for you as long as you’re hot. I think DJ’s have more longevity when it comes to touring and shows.
right on. glad jay is doin his thing.
i would love to see him again at some point but like nonchalant says, aint no way i can pay 60-70 for a ticket.
i paid 80 for prince but thats prince.
Shawn Corey…BRILLIANT!!!! Straight cash, guaranteed tour support and startup capital…what more can i say?
This might be a little out there, but the only other artist who is even making moves business wise is The Game. Now black wallstreet aint nothing like The Roc but with Game now in movies and putting out consistent albums; Game has definitely stepped it up. He is at least trying these days.
Back in the day you had outkast pushin the whole dungeon family, The roc, and every other aggin was pushing their shit to get cake. Now only a few artists like Kanye (who is a business) game and jay-z and how could i forget 50 are the real aggina pushing their business.
No one does it better than 50 and jay tho
Game? how can u say that, wtf is he doin?

Its hard to imagine geriatric rappers, but good music is timeless. My folks put me onto good music; I grew up on EWF, the Isleys, Mothers Finest you name it. It takes more than one generation to keep the music alive. And from time to time I go to concerts with the old folks because I love to here good music. But the question is, what music are you passing on to your kids? Is it Jay Z?
Hey Gotty, I know you’er skeptical about whether or not Hov can be a big tour draw, but lemme ask you this. . . .
did you try to get tickets to that “American Gangster” tour he did? you know, in the small, 300 person venues?
Hov sells out small venues in 10 seconds. . . . if you do the math, that’s about 1800 people per minute. . . . and so on.
if anyone can do it, it’s hovito, baby.
i didnt know that jigga is seen that rarely on stage even in the us. i thought hes just not coming over to europe. the only show i know he did around here was a gig in amsterdam 5 years ago that sucked. but I’ve seen a lot of concerts in amsterdam and most artists suck after smoking a whole day dutch weed….
…but this deal expains why he’s headliner for europe’s biggest hiphop fetsival (splash!) this year. I’m sure lots of people will go there just to see jigga once.
Just to chime in real quick…
This deal and the scope of it is not new.
I brokered the same mold (and model) for Madonna.
Other acts to follow.
his concert in t.dot last night was on point. dude is definitely a force to be reckoned with.on the tour front.
I Can’t Wait for The Atlantic City Show
lets not forget U2.
They’re down for some Live Nation paper as well.
@ Complexone
I’m interested in purchasing some of your artwork. I would also like to see renderings of Malcolm X, Muhammad Ali, Jay-Z, NaS, and Marvin Gaye…
If your serious about selling any contact me @ DysCompLexSick@gmail.com
Jay-Z never ceases to amaze me with his business acumen. No matter how much people critique him. He just keeps getting more successful. And we still wanna hear his music, whether to say how much we love him or hate him or its not like that shit 12yrs ago. He continues to break ground and has become an institution; no one else currently can say that. Arguably, 50 or Puffy. Comparing to Parrot heads, Rolling Stones & EWF, eh, I dunno big shoes, but they have them in every generation and this is the main candidate if there will be one for us in hip-hop. Love him or hate him. Love him for the record.
It’s def a good look. As far as it being successful…time’ll tell, but knowing Jay….
@ Complexone…
Those stencils are the grouse mate. What r the chances of getting them to Australia?
I know I can get them there. it’s just a matter of how much the shipping would be.
Just a quick price check says its around $28 – $35 US.
