T.I. – No Matter What

04.29.08 Written by Gotty™

Pic via C&D

I hate to say it, but maybe the case gave T.I. back some of the focus, content & intensity that was missing from the last album. Pain makes for good music. Always has & always will.

The Harris family men in the picture (anybody else read that book or just me?). Fresh’s caption – “The youngest one…I blame Tiny.”

Yeah, hell awaits you Fresh lol.

“Who’s The Nicest?”

04.28.08 Written by LC Weber

Sean Price

“…Sean Price is, motherfucker let’s go.”

A truck rolled through the alley behind my apartment the other day blaring Flo Rida and I got this chill down my spine that could mean only one thing – it’s springtime. It’s that time of year when you can give me any cheap beat and an ignorant hook, and I’ll be on the dance floor faster than you can raise your finger and say “Long Island Ice Tea, please.”

But mixed in with the T-Pain guilty pleasures of my warm-weather mixes are always the lasting joints that invoke the same feeling of heat and hedonism. This year, I think one such track will be “Like You” by Sean Price. The reggae dub sample at the top sets it off and Sean P’s tough delivery just makes me want to be back in high school, driving Read the rest of this entry »

“The Black Out” – Review Of Kidz In The Hall’s The In Crowd

04.28.08 Written by TC

<br /> Kidz In The Hall The In Crowd Album Cover

Chicago-based, Hip-Hop duo Kidz In The Hall garnered considerable recognition with their well-rounded debut, 2006′s School Was My Hustle. Hailed by critics as a “throwback” to the days when rap music thrived more so off it’s content than character, producer Double-O and emcee Naledge earned more props than platinum but these scholars graduated in more ways than one. Back with a new deal with the rejuvenated independent powerhouse Duck Down Records, the Kidz make a marginal improvement on their initial outing mainly due to Double-O’s upgraded production game, but Naledge opts to settle for style over substance making The In Crowd satisfactory when it could have been substantial. “What It Is” – Review Of Lil Mama’s Voice Of The Young People

04.28.08 Written by TC

Lil Mama Voice Of The Young People Album Cover

1989 marked a monumental year for ladies in Hip-Hop music. With influential “femcees” like MC Lyte and Queen Latifah conveying experiences from the female perspective, the culture found a definitive counterbalance to the increasing male bravado. It was also the year Lil’ Mama was born. Fast forward to 2008 and while the aforementioned legends have moved on to other forms of entertainment, Niatia Kirkwell b.k.a. Lil’ Mama is poised to fill their storied footsteps, claiming to be the Voice Of The Young People. Her debut single “Lip Gloss” was written off as just another ringtone magnet, but numerous interviews and radio spots found the youngster insisting she was much more beneath the surface.

On her debut Voice Of The Young People (VYP), the Brooklyn starlet proves her competent mic skills throughout with admiration, but several questionable beat choices and amateur choruses make her rookie season a predominant frisbee.

Seeking to give her youthful listeners some jewels to grow by, songs like “L.I.F.E.” and “Broken Pieces” are honest attempts at creating music with profound subject matter. “College” is a reflective account of a daughter visiting an incarcerated father and gaining invaluable knowledge on the curveballs life has to offer and T-Pain supplies a perky summer jam on “What It Is (Strike A Pose)” for Lil’ Mama to rock in true b-girl fashion. “I Have Nothing…”

04.28.08 Written by Gotty™

Two things happened to spark this…

1. I spied this pic @ C&D and just shook my damn head.

2. I watched a screener of Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins & “Saving All My Love” came on towards the very end of the movie.

That’s when I decided that I definitely missed that old Whitney Houston.

From her rise in the 80′s & prominence throughout the 90′s, she’s the vocal prototype for the feminine voice in music. Mariah. Beyonce. Alicia. Recent followers, like Kelly Clarkson & Leona Lewis. They all followed the path blazed by Whitney. Read the rest of this entry »

“Bankroll…”

04.28.08 Written by Gotty™

H.E.R. said I had to post this video.

Ace Hood is the first artist off DJ Khaled’s joint venture with Def Jam called We The Best Records (Seriously). There was a street video for this song but now there is an official video.

Since it’s Khaled-related, I say it should only be a matter of days before Mundy comes through with his machete & pen.

At least the uptempo switching of the beat @ the chorus makes it tolerable. The first time it snapped & the pace Read the rest of this entry »

The whole backstory with Lebron & Deshawn Stevenson…not even worth the energy. Google it.

But when I heard them talkin’ about this track this morning on the NBA pregame and how it was played in a club frequented by the Wiz players, the title is all I could think of.

“You saw the Ryan Leslie clip of him doing something to the Lollipop song? This guy’s really something else.”

I’m sure to those trained in the arts, it’s not the most challenging piece. But since my experiences with the keys began & ended with the white Casio, I found it impressive, especially considering I couldn’t even follow “Greensleeves” with the lights guiding me through.

I Dougie…

04.27.08 Written by TSSCrew

Words By David D.

*Sigh*

I have a confession.

I “Dougie.”

That’s right folks; the song is even my ringtone (and before that, it was “Yahhh Bitch). Just two days ago, I was at a party and asked the DJ to play the song, then proceeded to rub my head in that odd, semi-androgynous, mildly retarded way the guys in the video do it. And in case you were wondering, I was sober.

Glad that’s off my chest. Hell, might as well keep going.

I crank things too. Soulja Boy. Batman. I crank’em. I 2 Step. I Walk It Out. And just last year, you could probably catch me giving an unsuspecting breezy the Heizman. And back in the day (my Mississippi/Louisiana folks are gonna feel me on this one) I used to Josephine Jonny, Monkey Swang and Bunny Hop.

Also…

…I believe Outkast is the absolute best Hip-Hop group ever. Read the rest of this entry »

“From Pied Piper…To Goldilocks.”

04.27.08 Written by TSSCrew

Words By ContraTM

It’s a strangely eerie day for me when the R. drops new material lately.

I used to openly rejoice the day. I remember when the self-titled LP dropped, I put aside my differences with what he did to Aaliyah, and bumped the LP for what it was worth, until I began feeling morally impugned.

Yes, even then, this whole business with the little barely teen girls (and of course the aforementioned marriage) made me uneasy. Then there were more child abuse charges, and then the golden showers, the petty feuds with fellow artists and even the bad quality porn (which always perplexed me. You’d expect him to be able to afford better equipment and at least have lights in the house or something.)

Surprisingly, this hasn’t fazed his fan base. Read the rest of this entry »
