Unfortunate.
No, I’m not some bitter college fan whose bracket was destroyed by the game. I’m just a guy who likes to stick it to America like any other respectable human being.
And Memphis winning would have done that.
The team was full of young, African-American tatted-up males from varying backgrounds. They played a fast-paced, up and down game. The star of the team was a physical, scrappy kid who’s tenacity matched any one else on the court.
They only lost one game all season.
And who would have know by the way the team was covered in the media?
While everyone was singing the praises of Laettner 2k8 over at UNC, nobody was trying to look at the Tigers. Derrick Rose, one of the tatted Tigers, was just as dynamic all year as anybody else in college ball. However until the tourney, his role & statistics were downplayed all year.
These guys straight mowed through the tournament, including an utter destruction of the favorite UCLA. Still, no respect. The team was treated as a group of untrained upstarts who somehow made it to the championship. The fact of the matter is, they were a well-oiled machine headed by one of the best coaches in college hoops. Speaking of Coach Calipari, I have to tip my hat at him for challenging the media for not giving the Tigers respect due to their backgrounds, the program’s history & choice of conference. He took on the media and defended his team in the face of all the criticism all year.
So, I watched the final minutes of the game. My sheer joy at watching these underdogs shock the nation soon turned to sadness as victory slipped from their hands in a terrible breakdown (see: choke).
But for those two minute before the end of regulation, I watched the game, proud of the ignored, insulted, underestimated Memphis Tigers. For the last few weeks, the Tigers represented that underrepresented sector of America, that group that is always told they would never amount to anything.
Last night, they proved America wrong. Though they lost, the Memphis Tigers played a hell of a game and made America watch these neglected brothers stake their claim to the throne.
Forget Kansas; the Memphis Tigers made me damn proud.
At this point, we might as well cue up some already prepared theme music. Even in defeat, we ride.

Exciting to watch.
Not hitting those free throws down the stretch was painful to see tho.
I wanted Memphis to win, but to me that game was more the epitome of why College basketball sucks.
A 35 second shot clock+A three point line meant for middle schoolers+Awful referees=Negative basketball.
Davidson Kansas game was another prime example of this…pass it around the perimeter and hope Curry can jack in a 18 footer. Gets you all the way to the Elite 8!
NBA 4 Life.
Anybody holding?

NBA < College. NBA is a prolonged game of one-on-one on most nights.
Let me look into it gotty.
that was a great game. kansas pulled it out (pause) and memphis can only blame themselves. the tigers shouldn’t hold their head down. they won the most amount of games in a season EVER in the history of ncaa. their season will be remembered for years to come. and so will that of kansas.
of course, i will point out to you all that derrick rose and sherron collins are from where? it goes without saying that the chi is always in the middle of something.

Kinda like the “offense” that Memphis runs…
Make a gotDAMN freethrow….
Alright, I’m done venting…
Hold up!
Memphis ran offense sets?
The NBA is boring as hell to me. Sorry. It only cranks up slightly during the the final few rounds of the PO’s.
That terrible free throw shooting was gonna get to them…
I listen to sports radio all day long. I watch ESPN on the daily and I surf many sports site on the innerwebs. I never really saw a clear bias AGAINST Memphis. Maybe I missed something? Matter of fact, alot of the “experts” had nothing but praise for this squad. Memphis and Stephon Curry were the two most talked about subjects int he tourney. I don’t think race was the issue here, it was just that all the Elite 8 teams were THAT good and worthy of the title. If people were picking Kansas or UNC over Memphis it was because they legitimately had a shot.
And yes, the college game is fundamentally better than the NBA (In the last 10 years anyway), but NCAA basketball is shaped so that the regular season has little meaning. For most of the teams in the bracket, you already knew they were gonna be in before the season was even halfway over.
I’m a die-hard Kentucky fan so naturally when they went out in the first round I had to choose another team to route for. I too noticed that Memphis was considered the overrated #1 seed and the negative media coverage. I like their coach and team- Derrick Rose and CDR are big-time guards. So I was routing for them throughout the tournament. Let’s give Kansas props though… They made it through the entire tournament and beat the heavy favorite convincingly (UNC) That itself is a major accomplishment. If Rose doesn’t go into the NBA and coach picks up some big men, the Tigers will be deep next year and can make another run. Good post, TC.
WAIT A SEC…. SO MEMPHIS WAS FAVORED IN EVERY SINGLE GAME THEY PLAYED THIS YEAR INCLUDING THE CHAMPIONSHIP GAME. BUT YET YOU STILL THINK THEY GOT NO RESPECT AND FLEW UNDER THE RADAR. I THINK MAYBE YOUR THE ONE WHO WAS ASLEEP.
If anybody saw Memphis’ press conference Saturday night, they almost looked liked revolutionaries, man, like Panthers from the sixties with all these white press people hanging on to their every word…
Hold up!

are you serious?? Memphis runs a “princeton on steroids” system. Do you guys watch basketball at all before the tourney?

REALLY??? LED BY CALIPARI?? U DONT THINK HE WROTE EVERY WORD THEY SAID AND HAD THEM MEMORIZE IT THE NIGHT BEFORE.
Great write up David…
I wanted Memphis to win too.
Enh…living here, casually following them over the years (They’ll always be “Memphis State” to those who know), the knock against Memphis has always been either “they play in a weak conference” or “they rely on athleticism too much and will falter against a well-coached, planned attack.”

I saw bits & pieces of several games & watched them thru a few key games. There were some elements of an offense, of course. But for the most part, it was all attack, attack, defense to create offense, attack.
word yo! brotha speaks da truth..the hated on tigers lost that game but gained the RESPECK of America!! hopefully..they played their assess off and only lost 2 games all season. D Rose please be drafted by the KNICKS come June..WE NEED YOU IN NYC!!!!!!!!!!
good write up, but IMO Kansas “represented that underrepresented sector of America, that group that is always told they would never amount to anything.” just as much as memphis did…
I really can’t believe people like College ball more than the NBA.

yes thats there system. They play a princeton system but with alot more speed and athleticism. lots of back dorr cuts. They are always moving with out the ball.
really?
Actually they don’t run princeton. They run dribble drive motion which is isolation for one player who drives in with other people slightly moving around the arc for a kick out. Read all about it in SI man. Overall, it was a great game. Did anyone catch the press conference after the semi finals and Rose sayin Sh*t into the mic? That was hilarious
Memphis was aight for Gotty’s ethos, but yungin’s done forgot about the original ESPNightmares–U of M’s Fab Five who were birthed by Tark the Shark’s UNLV Runnin’ Rebs who were birthed by Houston’s Phi Slamma Jamma.
Each squad started 5 high-flyin’ hood-looking brothas who would’ve gotten ran off every campus they set foot on by cops and paranoid student bodies except for the fact they were making millions for their school’s AD.
All them boys scared all hell out of every frat boy, sorority chick, and every squad the NCAA for years.
I’m willing to add Rose and old-man-game-having CDR and Coach Cal–the most hated Italian this side of Giuliani, to the family tree…
Maybe Gramma-ma can have ‘em over for the next family cookout.
NBA>College, although basketball is a beautiful thing any way you slice it… oh and all the Kansas hate is wonderful haha.
I think this write up is a definite stretch and looks like it’s grabbing at straws for a story that’s really not there.
Calling a team that was favorited throughout underestimated and an underdog is just stupid.
And praising Calipari after this game is stupid. Coaching 101 (hear Coach Thompson’s radio call of last night’s game?) says to foul at the end of the game with that little time left w/ a 3 pt lead. Don’t let the other team get a 3 off… Oh well… And I didn’t hear any criticsm of his players for their backgrounds and if Calipari responded to something to that effect he was probably just trying to deflect away any negatives. He’s an ass… just ask John Cheney. The criticsm of his team that I remember the media harping on was that they shot free throw’s poorly and even if you’re blessed athletically bad free throw shooting is bound to haunt you. He arrogantly said it won’t be an issue. And they were right and he was wrong I’m a fan of neither team, and I was rooting against Memphis because their coach is and always will be a dick. Glad to see him lose in the manner that he did. Feel bad for the kids though… cause they are just kids. Instead of focusing on a story that wasn’t there and tipping your hat to a school cause it had a bunch of players that fit an image you approve of, maybe you should step back and really look and listen to what was said and make a more informed write up next time around…
If anything this game can be a metaphor for the so called “neglected brothers”. There’s plenty of talented “neglected brothers” out there doing great things and looking real good for awhile… but they move too fast and don’t bother getting fundamentally sound. And before they know it, they’re losing and others are passing them by…
Alright that’s it for my rant, something about this just struck a chord with me.
You may be proud of Memphis. But last time I checked Kansas had players from tough backgrounds too. As a matter of fact, all teams in the tourney do. If anybody represents digging in, working hard and getting the very best out of yourself, its Darnell Jackson.
This guy wasn’t a freshman walk-on like Rose. It took him 4 years of determination to get into the starting line up. He has had some tough times off the court too, and was the spiritual leader of a tenacious Kansas team.
I understand people didn’t often talk Memphis up, but I thought it was because of their easier conference and poor free throw shooting, not because of their “backgrounds.” And in the end, those who said Memphis couldn’t win were correct.
Kansas also were not given as much of a chance as UCLA and NCU. So you couldn’t really say Memphis were the underdogs. Also, at least here in Australia anyway, Memphis were favourites for that final game.
All that said, I supported Memphis all year and was going for them in the Final. They couldn’t get it done, but they put in a great performance. However, you have to give appropriate credit where it is due…Kansas dug deep and produced a result for the ages.
Nice post Gotty. Even though I was rooting for Memphis on their sheer talent/show stoppers, winning on an all black patrol (although Kansas is quite the same) and even more som for Memphis, was another reason I pinned my hopes on them.
But you overplayed their blackness. Every NCAA (or NBA, NFL etc) team is full of young, black men from varying backgrounds. Was Kansas that much different with a few specks of white? I will say that looking at Memphis you get the picture of a real black team whereas KS you feel like they’ve been highly recruited. Memphis were underdogs but they were supposed to beat the Jayhawks.
And yeah, Rose did get the cold shoulder until tourney time.
I didn’t post this.
I hate Kansas off GP. Black, white, whatever. I’d still hate them.
