We were going to do a regular “Week That Was” but decided to go about it a little differently. Instead of showing you what we posted on here this week, the choice was made to let you see & hear what fueled us & our work through a grueling week.
So I asked the Crew, “What album/song are you listening to right now?”
And the responses varied.
Call it “Crew Love.”
Chris “Preach” Smith
Pete Rock serves up yet another butter-soft beat. In the process, Non-Phixion solidifies their underground legend with compact yet layered lyrics. This has been my background music for writing as of late.
Contraâ„¢
The Roots – “Clock With No Hands”
As a loner and a roamer of the world, I often find solace in this song. It’s a very beautiful painting of the harsh realities I’ve encountered across the globe; the fragility of human relationships and the entrapment of an overactive mind. It’s a deep assessment into the philosophies that govern the balance between self-sufficiency and dependency on those you keep close to you, be they friend or foe, over Kamal’s keys and ?uestlove’s drumkit…
1.”You not feeling me? Fine. It costs you nothing, pay me no mind.”
2.”What you eat don’t make me shit.”
Plus, I’m missing NY like a muhfucka right now…
Lenny Williams – Cause I Love You
I gotta agree with David’s comment on samples. I reserve my comments on what Face did to this song. Anyhow, my girl in Ontario brought this back about three weeks ago. Hasn’t got off the playlist since. Smooth shit. Gets crazy nightime spins.
Dirk Diggahoe
“A thug changes & love changes, and best friends become strangers…”
Sick beat which Nas proceeds to tombstone.
OutKast Feat. Goodie Mob – Git Up Git Out
Amazing backdrop for one of Hip-Hop’s most memorable motivational songs.
Beat is impossible NOT to dance when you hear it. Hector Lavoe is a musical genius.
Everybody rips it over a haunting beat. One of the greatest (albeit slept-on) posse cuts of all-time.
Herfection
Junior Boys – When I’m Not Around
Reminds me of someone I used to care about. The beat will make you get lost in your thoughts for someone.
Happy, lazy day song. And considering that I’d walk in the rain with someone this song makes me daydream about it…and that special someone.
If you enjoy powerful experimental instrumentals, take a dose of this electronic tech pop gem.
Sleepy Brown – Til Your Legs Start Shaking
My sexy song…
David D.
“I don’t got that bad of a mouth do I?/Fuckshitassbitchcuntshoobetydoobop…”
One of the funniest lines I’ve ever heard. I always laugh out loud.
Karma – Once (sampled for Weezy’s “I Feel Like Dying”)
Sometimes samples are way better than the newer Hip Hop version. This is one of those cases. Chilling tale of drug abuse.
Q-Tip – Verses From the Abstract
Man, Tip went in with some straight classic material for a classic album.
Just listen. It has been this week’s “Eli” for me…
Drew
Enlightening usually. Powerful on a mushroom trip.
Sao Paolo vibes make me think seriously about quitting all jobs to write journals about such tunes.
DJ Sorce-1
Ferocious Jeru diss track directed at GangStarr from his 2000 effort Heroz For Hire. Jeru and Primo have yet to work on anything else since the release of this song.
I.G. Off and Hazadous – Hip-Hop Til I Die
A classic late 90′s backpack rap tune with great production by DJ Spinna. This one takes me back to high school.
Essential old school reggae track that has been sampled countless times. Perfect for a spring BBQ or ride around the block.
Forgotten banger from the mid 90′s. Nostalgic lyrics about the good ol’ days and hard hitting production make this one a must have.
MZ
Mick Boogie & Kidz In The Hall – Detention
Cohesive mixtape that I bumped all weekend. Naledge goes in from the detention “lunch table” freestyle until album end. I knew it was good for real, when I looked over & my girl was nodding her head. Mick Boogie puts out some dope mixtapes.
Jesse H.
The Honey Drippers- Impeach the President
Sampled twice on Ready to Die, this track is deceptively giddy in spite of its title.
Big Punisher – The Dream Shatterer
You could eat nothing but bricks for a week and you still wouldn’t make shit this hard.
Usually DMX just makes me laugh uncontrollably with his absurd penchant for barking over every track. But this instrumental just makes me fucking lose it on the dance floor.
If we were to make a marijuana-inspired playlist and leave out Mr. George Clinton, we would have a lot of explaining to do to the gods of funk.
This beat (My favorite Primo beat ever) makes me feel like I’m inside a Super Nintendo game that’sbeing played on a beater T.V. propped up on a crate on a street corner baking in 100 degree summer sun… Just bump this shit and see what happens, okay?
TC
The flow on this album is impeccable and in ironic fashion, Mary’s vocals have only gotten stronger as her career progresses. But basically I’m still reeling off her live peformance of “Stay Down”, “Hurt Again”, and “Fade Away.”
Jay-Z & Mary J. Blige – You’re Welcome
It just sounds nostalgic. And it’s on my Growing Pains. Oh yeah, ya’ll gonna listen to that album dammit.
Jada G.
John Legend – Do You Wanna Ride (Live)
In a matter of notes, you’re amped for a ride that you didn’t even know you would be taking. Reminds me of the view of the Manhattan skyline from my window—possibility awaits amidst an unclear destination.
Matthew M.
I have decided to write mine in Haiku form…
Paper Route Gangstaz – Wood Grain
Poltergeist sample
Blowing my head off, awesome;
Chop up vocals, yeah!
Paper Route Gangstaz – Bama Gettin’ Money (Diplo Remix)
It’s ‘Careless Whispers’:
I just threw up in my mouth
From sheer ecstasy

This is driving me insane! Someone must have found the unedited version of Jay-Z’s ‘Streets is watching’ by now?
I mean, this is TSS after all
- This week been listening to In My Lifetime Vol. 1, unfairly criticised in my opinion. Glossy production but ill lyrics
where’s the gotty list?
@Amp – just go to zshare.net, click browse, pick the track/album you wanna upload from your music file then click “share it”
in my lifetime, vol. 1 = my 2nd favorite jay-z album (behind reasonable doubt)
I’ve been killling:
Guilty Simpson – Ode to the Ghetto
AZ – Undeniable
Prodigy – H.N.I.C. pt.2
DJ Big Mike & Dirty Harry : Dramills – Drama Season
Ali Vegas – America’s Prince
DJ Absolut & Havoc (Mobb Deep) – Forced to go Solo
Ya Boy – I’m About to Murda This Shit
Plus many more mixtape dudes y’all probably never heard of. Ohhh!!! I can’t forget the Mickey Factz mixtapes!!!
Busta Rhymes’ “Don’t Touch Me Now” is the song of the Spring!
K all fucking day!!!
No imput from Pat M? what happened to that guy? He fell off just like I did
good article! good shitz, coome onn a global link for all dhat mysikal chit !! and it’s perfect like me
@sherm, 2nd jayz album too! lol maybe a coincidence.
@jeru the greums
jeru with ‘ One Day’. ” The Sun … East” remain one of a large preferred, in particular the piece ‘ Dirty Rotten Scoundrel’. I return also all the time on ‘ Me Gold Tha Papes’ and ‘ Da Bitchez’ , two very strong pieces. Jeru is the best lyricist. At the level of phrased, it is indetronable. Jeru is a rapper symmetrical, there is symmetry in its flow, and I find that this kind of flow is very adapted when u acts to develop broad topics: at the same time simple and very effective. Primo I continue to follow this, I find it always effective but not original enough. I regret primo of Jeru, of Gangstarr. Primo only appears when he is with an artist which he really likes. It make a long time that we did not have a primo of the time of Group Home.
In My Ollydays… i pUt You, the Greatests europeans punchlines everheard byh american hh heads.
peace yall!
Nicolay and Kay : Timeline
De La Soul – De La Soul is Dead
Scarub – Heavenbound
Greums!!! What’s the deal kid??!!
I don’t wanna risk any legal action by posting it, but the production on Madonna’s Hard Candy album is str8 crack!
eminem – the marshall mathers lp
Premo – outside lookin in
guilty simpson – ode to the ghetto
prodigy – hnic 2
in my lifetime, vol. 1 = my 2nd favorite jay-z album (behind reasonable doubt)
———————————————
Hell naw! That album has joints but it takes an L just for Sunshine & I Know What Girls Like…
loool @mp have deja! the hard candy album. lmfao because after that album is out, u don’t risk any legal action any more. you under regard the capacity of madonna! lol world number one female singer. come post that homie, put your bolts on the table !!! hard hardy !
Atmosphere – “…Paint That Shit Gold” – whole album, but particularly “The Skinny,” “Music Box,”… f it, the WHOLE ALBUM!!
I couldn’t stop playin this week. Album of the year so far in my books…
My list? I post some crap daily lol.
Pat’s list – there’s quite a few others who didn’t contribute. It’s all about time constraints & such where everybody may not be able to get in.
@ amp – personally, i kinda like “sunshine”…”i know what girls like” is booty tho, i can’t defend that…i just prefer the younger, more lyrical jay-z…just my opinion nahmean
random request, but I’m DJing a party tonight, and can’t find an mp3 of ‘Do it Again’ by Deuce Poppi. I got the one I had off TSS, anyone still holding it? Kind of trash lyric-wise, but the beat fucking bangs. If you can help me out, it’d be super-appreciated. Thanks!
Nah, I feel U, Sherm. Imaginary Players is one of My favorite Hov joints. I just think Vol. 2 & American Gangster are more consistent throughout. No filler.
But hey, that’s just My opinion. And we’re all entitled to one.
mainstream food vs. lyricist fiquor
one word :)
“Do not put to us in the same bag because we sells to us in the same places. We are maybe in the same vats but there is not the same blow of pencil.”
so greums syr!

I missed the deadline for this one (or they got lost in the shuffle.) but if the Greatest QB of all time is interested I’ll hook it up:
Late Registration-Released when i was in Australia, so i missed out on it. Its like having a new Kanye album!
Death Certificate-Gets me in a solid FU mode to roll around with this summer. Well im too poor for a car so more walk around and sneer at Cubs fans.
White Stripes-Elephant
The guitar riffs just get deep in your brain and you cant do nothing about it.
I am not listening to Bizzy Bone,
And Tom shouldn’t you be fucking Gisele or watching the Celtics win the NBA title rather than worrying about little ol me?
somepunchlines:
“Doctor, i make a miscarriage because the street fucked me!”
“How not to be a pitbull when life’s a bitch”
“On the most throne of the world, we ever sat that on his ass”
“The life of a man… the death of a child”.
“My life is sadly beautiful …”
“If you draw with some prostheses it’s that God you protect”.
“Do not try to put at almond or you will shit by a tube-test”.
“More I know the men more I like my dog”
“If there were cocks on the ground there is which would go on the ass”
“I burp my roast chicken and i spit out 2 cops”.
“Me I dream, I accomplished, even if I croak unsastified”.
“gilded is the throne, electric is the chair”.
@ Gotty: Thanks for the new Max B my dude, you keeps it wavy!!! I’ve been playing the life out of that “Blow Me A Dub” track.
