K. Crazy Sexy Cool

We were going to do a regular “Week That Was” but decided to go about it a little differently. Instead of showing you what we posted on here this week, the choice was made to let you see & hear what fueled us & our work through a grueling week.

So I asked the Crew, “What album/song are you listening to right now?”

And the responses varied.

Call it “Crew Love.”

Chris “Preach” Smith

Non-Phixion – If You Got Love

Pete Rock serves up yet another butter-soft beat. In the process, Non-Phixion solidifies their underground legend with compact yet layered lyrics. This has been my background music for writing as of late.

Contraâ„¢

The Roots – “Clock With No Hands”

As a loner and a roamer of the world, I often find solace in this song. It’s a very beautiful painting of the harsh realities I’ve encountered across the globe; the fragility of human relationships and the entrapment of an overactive mind. It’s a deep assessment into the philosophies that govern the balance between self-sufficiency and dependency on those you keep close to you, be they friend or foe, over Kamal’s keys and ?uestlove’s drumkit…

Jay-z – Heart Of The City

1.”You not feeling me? Fine. It costs you nothing, pay me no mind.”

2.”What you eat don’t make me shit.”

Plus, I’m missing NY like a muhfucka right now…

Lenny Williams – Cause I Love You

I gotta agree with David’s comment on samples. I reserve my comments on what Face did to this song. Anyhow, my girl in Ontario brought this back about three weeks ago. Hasn’t got off the playlist since. Smooth shit. Gets crazy nightime spins.

Dirk Diggahoe

Nas – The Message

A thug changes & love changes, and best friends become strangers…”

Sick beat which Nas proceeds to tombstone.

OutKast Feat. Goodie Mob – Git Up Git Out

Amazing backdrop for one of Hip-Hop’s most memorable motivational songs.

Hector Lavoe – Aguanile

Beat is impossible NOT to dance when you hear it. Hector Lavoe is a musical genius.

Busta Rhymes Feat. Jamal, Redman, Keith Murray, Rampage & Lord Have Mercy – Flipmode Squad Meets Def Squad

Everybody rips it over a haunting beat. One of the greatest (albeit slept-on) posse cuts of all-time.

Herfection

Junior Boys – When I’m Not Around

Reminds me of someone I used to care about. The beat will make you get lost in your thoughts for someone.

Melo-X – Walking On Water

Happy, lazy day song. And considering that I’d walk in the rain with someone this song makes me daydream about it…and that special someone.

Health – Nosaj Thing

If you enjoy powerful experimental instrumentals, take a dose of this electronic tech pop gem.

Sleepy Brown – Til Your Legs Start Shaking

My sexy song…

David D.

Eminem – Who Knew

I don’t got that bad of a mouth do I?/Fuckshitassbitchcuntshoobetydoobop…”

One of the funniest lines I’ve ever heard. I always laugh out loud.

Karma – Once (sampled for Weezy’s “I Feel Like Dying”)

Sometimes samples are way better than the newer Hip Hop version. This is one of those cases. Chilling tale of drug abuse.

Q-Tip – Verses From the Abstract

Man, Tip went in with some straight classic material for a classic album.

Riskay – Smell Yo Dick

Just listen. It has been this week’s “Eli” for me…

Drew

Wale – Jay Joint

Enlightening usually. Powerful on a mushroom trip.

Curumin – Compacto

Sao Paolo vibes make me think seriously about quitting all jobs to write journals about such tunes.

DJ Sorce-1

Jeru The Damaja – 99.9%

Ferocious Jeru diss track directed at GangStarr from his 2000 effort Heroz For Hire. Jeru and Primo have yet to work on anything else since the release of this song.

I.G. Off and Hazadous – Hip-Hop Til I Die

A classic late 90′s backpack rap tune with great production by DJ Spinna. This one takes me back to high school.

Al Campbell – Take A Ride

Essential old school reggae track that has been sampled countless times. Perfect for a spring BBQ or ride around the block.

Dred Scott – Back In The Day

Forgotten banger from the mid 90′s. Nostalgic lyrics about the good ol’ days and hard hitting production make this one a must have.

MZ

Mick Boogie & Kidz In The Hall – Detention

Cohesive mixtape that I bumped all weekend. Naledge goes in from the detention “lunch table” freestyle until album end. I knew it was good for real, when I looked over & my girl was nodding her head. Mick Boogie puts out some dope mixtapes.

Jesse H.

The Honey Drippers- Impeach the President

Sampled twice on Ready to Die, this track is deceptively giddy in spite of its title.

Big Punisher – The Dream Shatterer

You could eat nothing but bricks for a week and you still wouldn’t make shit this hard.

DMX- When I’m Nothing

Usually DMX just makes me laugh uncontrollably with his absurd penchant for barking over every track. But this instrumental just makes me fucking lose it on the dance floor.

Parliament – Do That Stuff

If we were to make a marijuana-inspired playlist and leave out Mr. George Clinton, we would have a lot of explaining to do to the gods of funk.

GangStarr – Just To Get A Rep

This beat (My favorite Primo beat ever) makes me feel like I’m inside a Super Nintendo game that’sbeing played on a beater T.V. propped up on a crate on a street corner baking in 100 degree summer sun… Just bump this shit and see what happens, okay?

TC

Mary J. Blige – Growing Pains

The flow on this album is impeccable and in ironic fashion, Mary’s vocals have only gotten stronger as her career progresses. But basically I’m still reeling off her live peformance of “Stay Down”, “Hurt Again”, and “Fade Away.”

Jay-Z & Mary J. Blige – You’re Welcome

It just sounds nostalgic. And it’s on my Growing Pains. Oh yeah, ya’ll gonna listen to that album dammit.

Jada G.

John Legend – Do You Wanna Ride (Live)

In a matter of notes, you’re amped for a ride that you didn’t even know you would be taking. Reminds me of the view of the Manhattan skyline from my window—possibility awaits amidst an unclear destination.

Matthew M.

I have decided to write mine in Haiku form…

Paper Route Gangstaz – Wood Grain
Poltergeist sample
Blowing my head off, awesome;
Chop up vocals, yeah!

Paper Route Gangstaz – Bama Gettin’ Money (Diplo Remix)

It’s ‘Careless Whispers’:
I just threw up in my mouth
From sheer ecstasy
