Anybody who knows, knows I was ridin for Yola as soon as he hit the scene.
Evidence #1 – “I’m A Real Aggin..”
Evidence #2 – “A-1″
See, because Yola has that amazing backstory that every rapper seems to have, word to no Akon. Cliff Notes version – Homeless as a teen. Hustled to make it. Got a chance. Made the most it. All before the age of 20.
Then he took one to the face @ a red light one night in the A.
And as you can see from the above video clip, he’s still on the road to recovery. But, I’m assuming he’s progressed because I have seen a few tracks of his in the past few months. But never the less, when people speak down on certain artists for not having one quality or another, I think of Yola.
The young boy obviously has drive and focus. From the outside looking in, it seems as if he knows this rap game is his ticket so he treats it as such.
And he’s got talent.
Here’s to hoping his dream, often deferred, is one day fully realized.

yo, to all the sneakerheads on TSS, I need some help. I’m checking out shoes to cop for summer and I stumble on these:
http://www.doobybrain.com/2008/04/01/nike-dunk-low-sb-inspired-by-piet-mondrian/
http://www.nikeskateboarding.org/index.php/2008/03/29/piet-mondrian-dunk-sbs/
I NEED these sneaks, dude is easily my favorite painter and I’ve finally got a job that allows me enough money to cop expensive shoes and hats, lol. Anyone know where I could find a pair? I haven’t seen any online and I’m not really that big of a shoe follower (yet). Let me know, and please, please, help.
Alright, so after a little more digging, they’re not out yet, so I guess I’m putting out the call to anyone who may know someone at a shoe spot that could hang on to a pair or something. (does that go on? I don’t even know.) Regardless, I’m a 9.5 or a 10.
Damn, I never even heard about this.. And I feel bad being someone who’s not exactly a fan of him, but is.. if that makes sense? Like, I like his music, but I don’t keep up with him like that. Good to see he’s kickin tho, I’ma check this stuff you posted.
^ those dunks is kinda official.
i dunno about nowadays, but I remember anything Nike SB related as being hard to cop.
try going here: kicksfinder.com
all that site does is provide an eBay search interface for you…
@ Be Lund – or when they do drop, and if you don’t mind paying a *little* bit more than retail..you might wanna try here:
http://www.flightclubny.com/
you might get your shit pushed in, nahmean
I Be Lund
those joints are official, and like “Teef” was saying, online is the way to go to get your hands on ‘em.
I’m on the hunt now myself, so if I find some in a 10 1/2 or 11, I’ll put the word out.
I’ll try to reup the Really In The Streets mixtape. Might as well b/c I’ve been meaning to put it on the iPod anyways.
Dunks = …no comment b/c my momma said if you ain’t got something good to say…
If that shooting was unprovoked…I hope Yola makes it to spite the fuck who shot his ass.
I just watched that Yola video, and I’m honestly glad that he’s in good spirits and on the road to recovery. Circumstances like that usually provide the fuel for someone to not only realize their goals, but amplify the success that comes with it many times over, like Fiddy & ‘Ye.
BUT
a Southern Drawl + wired jaw does not make for someone that’s easy to understand.
Props to whoever transcribed what he was saying and did the subtitles for the clip….lol

ain’t gonna let up came on the ipod yesterday, and i said where the hell is yola. this gonna make me pull for him harder. the kid had some good songs. gonna have to break out the mixtape.
@ Veego
U don’t think The Fix or College Droupout are classics?
Speakin’ of which
@ OED
I found this:

Ain’t Gon Let Up still get everybody jumpin in the club.
I JUST DON’T GIVE A FUCK!
the fix has some great material on it, but the hip hop/r&b cuts on it do nothing for me. Dropout is good, but not real cohesive. i think kanye’s last two were better albums. why?
@ Be Lund:
Those aren’t set to release until holiday ’08, so this summer is outta the question. They’re suppossed to hit “hi” retail stores, so good luck finding/getting them.
But I’ll take SB’s over AF1′s anyday (unless they’re some Sheeds)
^^^With the Grandma couch plastic coating? :-&
@ Veego
Just a leftover from yesterday’s post. I remember you saying The Blueprint was the last official classic you heard and I had to disagree…
i feel you, i meant i more in the story of what quest said or the post, the story behind buying it, and that was and will be remembered, when i talk to my kids (if i don’t leave them all on the sheets), i will talk about going to blockbuster music and grabbing that album. i have some other albums, personlly i like more (i think tap muzik is beteer, for right now and the mind frame i am in) since then. i worded it wrong, but i’m still iffy on the fix, i might need to grab that again and listen.
grabbing it now. i’m not a closed minded poster, i like to find out if i was wrong sometimes.
Yeah I feel you though. The Blueprint will forever identifty with that crazy September 11th, so it remains one of the most memorable albums I’ve ever bought…
Props for the Triple Six joint. Classic…cassette tape white noise sound and all.
@ TC
I’ll check that laink out in a few.
Speaking of classics post-Blueprint, what are some of the albums you consider to be classic, or “just misses”?
Personally, off the top of the head I think The Game Theory & The Minstrel Show were two albums (thematically speaking) that were a song here or there from being “next level” material.
Just wondering some of y’alls opinion.
@ Veego
I hear you on your assessment of those two albums. I gotta go back and check The Fix. I think that Dropout almost gets a pass into classic territory (ala Dick Vitale – Basketball hall of fame)simply cuz that man made that album so personal and so easy to relate to….and it bumped.
The Minstrel Show was a 9th wonder away fro being a next level album. His beats killed that album.
^ lmao. that’s f’d up, MZ!
Post Blueprint
Most definitely The College Dropout for starters. Is it perfect:: No (2 skits back-to-back…wtf) but when considering the strength of the majority of the songs on there, it does indeed get that “pass” for me. How real was “All Falls Down?” How ill was “2 Words?” “Jesus Walks” and “Slow Jamz” was everywhere. On my iPod’s classic song playlist, I think I easily got 11 of them joints on there (throw “School Spirit” on @ a Greek party) so yeah…that was a big album and he did big things with that one.
I’ll never forget the first time I heard The Fix…I was in my boy’s car on our work break and he had it a couple weeks before we it dropped (this was ’02…well before a Role Call lol. Don’t ask me how!) And I’m listening and saying to myself: “This is the type of album Face needed to make…” Not too rooted in cliched Southness cuz he was too talented of an MC for that, but he still did “him” on joints like “Sellout” and “Break Me Down.” Kanye’s production on there was incredible too. “In Cold Blood” is masterwork and “Guess Who’s Back” is damn near crack-rock. I was like “This should get 5 Mics!”…low and behold a month later…what do I see on The Source with Murder Stink on the cover??? (hate them bastards)…5 Mics. So yeah, it was short and sweet but had a lot of power in it.
And lastly: American Gangster. I think a lot of people actually just wrote that off as just another “good” Jigga album instead of embracing the detail. I saw the movie before I heard the album so I’m listening to “Fallin” and “Roc Boys” like yeah. And it wasn’t like he just copied and pasted ideas from what Denzel did it, it was still about him. I honestly will never stop listening to “Party Life” even if a doctor told me it’ll kill me. I saw him and MJ in DC this month and he made it a point to basically rap accapella on “No Hook” and “I Know” so you can hear how dope the lyrics and his rhyme schemes were. Just an example of a vet doing what he does best. Blueprint has a lot of factors outside of the music to boost its legacy like September 11th, beef with Nas, and the coming of Blaze and Kanye, so I feel people give it an “untouchable” immunity and I feel American Gangster is on its ass!
Oh yeah I forgot:
Mannnn The Minstrel Show mannnn…I root for LB but them beats on there….yeah…they ain’t….they ain’t cuttin’ it dog lol. That’s why I feel GetBack is there most acessible and best album. Like the whole theme of Minstrel Show was vauge. They only really poked fun @ R. Kelly and avoided a lot of the topics that everyone assumed they were gonna tackle. Getback got diversity on the production tip. 9th is like 1.5 dimensional. He’s dope…but a 60 straight minutes of that kinda bog down an albums potential. They never would’ve had a “Extra Hard” outta him…and you need that shit for shows.
And lol…I can not stand Game Theory…not that it’s WACK…but since Things Fall Apart they’ve really strayed from making conventional albums and that’s not exactly the best for a LP. (Live show…oh yeah!) And not that I’m trying to place them in a box but who’s really gonna sit up and listen to “!!!!!” (Phernology) and that Dilla tribute on Game Theory….get to the beats and rhymes Tariq! And I think this new one is a step back in that direction…
TC is SO on point tonight!
for all you 206 heads…..via ATL
Your hood Reem!
very rough. shot in like 2 hours around ATL..
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fDpjqqXbaGI
I feel you on those, but The Game Theory was sposed to be some real depressing, sky is falling sh*t, and I think they succeeded in that. Things Fall Apart was my dawg, but I think it as a great ALBUM in which no particular song stood out – which is odd, but that’s the way The Roots typically do things.
I’m a BIG LB supporter myself, and I feel like if GetBack and The Minstrel Show birthed a child it would be a perfect album. GetBack definitely had the better beats, but it played back slightly scattered and I think that’s where the conglomeration of producers might’ve worked against them a little bit.
at least until he gets to the critique on Phrenology. That album makes my top 5, no hesitation. I thought that !!! was pretty dope, but that may be because I grew up listening to punk and hardcore…
the fix has some great material on it, but the hip hop/r&b cuts on it do nothing for me
——————————————————
The Fix is a classic. Introspective rhymes about God, Religion & Betrayal. Up there with The Diary, IMO. Heaven & Someday aren’t the average R&B infused joints. Profound & thought provoking stuff. Too bad it got 5 mics in an era where the mics were meaningless. Easily one of My favorite albums ever, rap or otherwise.
^^Both LB and the Roots are dope bc they aren’t afraid to switch it up…both groups definately KIM.
Seen LB once and the Roots roughly 8 or 9 times. Never once have they dissappointed. Some of their shows have been more like long jam sessions where they play a huge variety of different music…
Haven’t rocked a Roots album front to back since Things Fall Apart. They’ve been almost too forward thinking, risking their fan base just to say they’re doing something different.
Illadelph Halflife > The rest of the Roots catalog
“You Got Me” stood out pretty good. And Musiq jacked “The Next Movement” for his classic debut. “Ain’t Sayin’ Nothin’ New!!!??!”
I’ve seen The Roots a few times too. Always an experience.
How in the blueeee hell is Speakerboxxx/Love Below not getting in this discussion?
And dammit, I’m gonna have to say Fishscale needs to be on the short list too…
How in the blueeee hell is Speakerboxxx/Love Below not getting in this discussion?
——————————————————–
Is Love Below even considered Hip Hop lol ?
But I feel ya on Fishscale…
Supreme Clientele > Fishscale > Bulletproof Wallets
All three are classics tho…
How in the blueeee hell is Speakerboxxx/Love Below not getting in this discussion?
=========================================

If Forces= America, then Dunks= Canada. If so I feel the same way.
I like the way he keeps talking about his grill and he even repeatedly reaches for it but alas….its not there.
