“We’ve been playa hated…
I don’t know what, and I don’t know why?
Why they want us faded?”
The above was sighted in Geneva, Switzerland.
I’d be lying if I said this was the first time I’d seen this sign. Technically, it would be the fourth. No matter how many times I’ve seen it, it still tickles and stings the same.
The second or third time I saw it, I approached the store manager and asked him why he figured Blacks needed their own category of music (why couldn’t they be in Jazz, or Pop, or “Urban”, or Soul or 70′s or 80′s or 90′s..etc?), and how did they determine who fell under the “Black music” umbrella.
I got quite dyspeptic when he replied. Suffice it to say, at some point, he thought it wise to say “Cassie? Mariah Carey, she is.. uh.. black.. uh… because, she has the Black blood, no?”
I make reference to the one-drop rule still in effect in the United *cough* States of America.
I got mildly angry then and wanted nothing more than to shove my Ben Drury’s all the way up his rectum…pause.
Then a funny little thought occurred to me.
Mr. Nasir Jones is releasing a new album with an endearing name.
Customer: “Where is Nas’ new album?”
Attendant: “You’re looking for Nigger? Row #3: Black Music.”
Jokes aside.
We are all biased to our own degrees, and like it or not, racism will always exist until we all become a homogeneous people. For that reason, our opinions will always have some slant (no pun) or skewed logic in them and accepting that is the first step toward getting rid of the prejudice.
However, when it comes to what we put out officially, in terms of labels, names, movements, brands, icons; there should be no race-based, no class or caste categorization; because the labels and the supposedly harmless names are what end up injecting and enculturating discriminatory mentalities in the average person.
Why fuel a system that’s already working against you?
My $0.02.

Powerful post.
i’ve always felt music should only be placed in 2 categories: GOOD or BAD
Let’s see… um, Black Music:
Rap (damn, I hate the word “rap”), R&B, Reggae, Jazz, Blues……… Rock & Roll, etc etc etc….
Lemme me see your Drury’s and send me the bill for the cleaning…

Thats agreed for Dirk,
Not Greums, (sorry greumster.)
it’s sad when you come to expect seeing things such as this.. i’ve come to the point where i chalk it up as ignorance and keep it moving…. as far as i’m concerned every genre of music should be classified as “Black Music”…. now on to other news… anyone holding DangerDoom “Mouse and the Mask?… preciate
Record labels had Black music divisions for yeeeeeeaars. You would always hear “so-and-so is the VP of Black music for ____ Records.” I think they only got rid of that within the last 5-10 years. I guess the rest of the world still catchin’ up.
anyone know if any tracks have leaked out from this? I wouldve thought there was at least one track out thats gonna be on the album..is it a sign its going to most likely be pushed back?..I have a feelin..most ive heard is a small snippet of horrible quaility.
t dot lol
wassup!

so sorry FOR U!)

The snoop album is great. i know there is some controversy about ghost writers but the only song he admit’s to not writing is sexual seduction. i can’t really knock it. Once pete rock admitted that T.R.O.Y. was a dilla beat all gloves are off. There isn’t a santa clause, Diddy is respected producer, and T-pain is a respected RNB singer. The universe is upside down.
Also is the New 50 cent floating around Before I SELF DESTRUCT or a mixtape. Becuase that link got bodied real fast.

Might as well call it the “nigger music section”!!! Fuck it man racism is here to stay, it ain’t going NOWHERE!!! People can pretend to be tolerant of other races all they fucking want but at the end of the day some people within other ethnic groups will have bias towards people of other ethnic groups. Call me a nigger, no problem! I’ll just punch you in the face or shank you!
When did Pete Rock say TROY was a Dilla beat? The controversy always was that he got the sample from Large Professor, far as I know. Is this some recent revelations?
Great write up. I’ve never personally seen anything like that in music stores (remember those?) and def would have been upset if I’d had. It’s bad enough that ‘they’ put the ‘urban’ or ‘rap’ section right in front of one way glass or in a place where ‘the niggers’ can readily be identified. Just another sign of the times I guess….Going way back the term for ‘Black Music’ used to Race Music’. I’ve even read where Nina Simone got upset about her music being called ‘Jazz’. She said that ‘Jazz’ was a term that white folks made up and that her music was ‘Classical’ (or something to that effect). You’re right in that until we all look the same there will always be racism. Even when were all the same somebody will come up with a way to separate us somehow too. Peace to Contra for dropping the science on us!
haha…. if that section is for black music then all rock, punk rock, blues, disco, soul, r&b AND hip hop albums should be there…. fuck it, just call the store “black music”

Don’t ask why, but I was lookin for a Donna Summer LP. I searched the HELL out of 70′s and 80′s…
just to be told in a matter-of-factly fashion: “Check ze black music, monsieur.”
Initially, i was like “Nigga, what?” then i remembered where I was and said “oh, right, black music. I’m on it.”

@tres
During a Pete rock recent interviews he was speak about his legacy and contribution he was saying TROY was a dilla beat. maybe he was referring to the sample influence or whatever but he gave dilla his credit I read it somewhere o
Yeah Nas is gonna stir up the melting pot with this one.
I haven’t even brought up the album title to my friends of the caucasian persuasion, but I have with my negro partners.
No one I’ve spoken to about it has a clear answer or been able to really explain to me how they feel about it.
I’m ready for discussion on this one. Better get to talking about it soon cuz “N*gger” will be here sooner than we think……………………
pw for trilla
yeah passwords for ross a must. snoop is fresh

I had to look that word up too. But, then i broke it down and thought about Pepto Bismol, so basically he got sick to his stomach when he heard the manager’s reply.

On They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.)…
Pete Rock: My man, Troy (rest in peace) passed away, [it] hurt the whole community, we were all shocked. It dealt a heavy blow. I don’t know how I made that beat because I was depressed through it all, but when I heard the sample, it turned something on in my soul. The shit made me cry as soon as I heard it. Next thing you know, I was hanging out with Large Professor one day at his house. I finished making the beat over his house because I was just fucking around like that. I was learning how to use the S-900, it was a sampler. I had the beat already made, I just wanted to get the horns down and he showed me how to do it, but I was still having problems sampling it and getting it to play it out on my drum machine. I just used the SP and re-sampled the horns with the SP [SP-1200]. I guess when he heard it, he might have thought I did it the way I did it at his house, but I kinda re-did it through the SP. By the time that song was finished, I had Charlie Brown from Leaders of the New School in the session with me, and we all cried! The record just makes you cry. It just said to me right then and there, “This is for everyone who has lost a loved one.” Now, at every funeral, every wedding, that record is played.
Shogun: Touche, young grasshopper.
@ LC: TSS World Tour. Hit me on gmail or some shit.
just to play devil’s advocate…there really arent that many black people in most countries in eastern europe(the only place ive seen these signs), so its like not the norm…i obviously disagree labeling it “black music” but i could see why
