I’m always trying to keep up with the St. Louis underground scene, even if I’ve since left the Lou. It’s a difficult task, simply because there’s a ton of good music being made by lots of different artists.

Gotta Be Karim

But every so often a track or album comes along that particularly grabs my attention. The latest joint to do it is Gotta Be Karim’s “When You See Me,” off his new release the Bean Pie EP. Built on fierce production from the previously featured Vandalyzm, Karim spits lyrical darts that showcase the right balance of new artist hunger and self-confidence. Lines like “You don’t even need to look hard to see me/you can hear the doors lock when I walk across the street see,/and all the white people thinking ‘good god he creepy’/and all the old heads thinking he used to be me,” are accentuated by Karim’s unique high-pitched flow. His nasally voice acts to set him apart on the first listen, but it’s his rhyming skill and off-color lyrics that really allow him to shine.

The rest of the EP features similarly dope production from locals as well as continued vigor from Karim. While the rhymes and songs are consistent in quality, they are different in style, doing what an EP should: provide examples of artistic diversity. While “When You See Me” is a street jam, “Revolutionary Bullshit” is a political charged rally song featuring another St. Louis standout, Black Spade. “Swagger Back” turns the bass up on the beat, while Karim loosens up and talks smack.

Overall these tracks act as a good musical motivation to anyone trying to get their hustle on or fans of new music. Cop the tracks to start your spring off in the right mindset.
