I’m sure you’ve played this game before; but suppose you were stranded on a deserted island with a solar powered iPod. I’m sure you’re thinking “Bet, 160 gigs of music I’ll be set until I’m rescued!” The only catch is that for the solar power to work you can only have ten albums. Not really logical, but neither is being on stranded on an island, so play along. What ten would you pick?
Around 2001, the mom & pop I used to go to proposed a similar scenario and put it up on their accompanying website for people to put their list up. Being the obnoxious (& lazy) person I am my list was this:
1. Illmatic
2. Reasonable Doubt
3. It Was Written
4. In My Lifetime Vol. 1
5. I Am
6. Vol. 2: Hard Knock Life
7. Nastradamus
8. Vol. 3: The Life & Times of Shawn Carter
9. The Blueprint
10. Ready to Die
Of course I was being halfway funny. But, to a degree, I could live with those albums. The owners sent me an email to see if I was serious and after explaining my reasoning to them they put it up.
At that point in time, those ten albums were in constant rotation for me because my roommate & I would blaze, and look for subliminals thrown between Jay & Nas. So that could’ve easily been my list.
But time and lists change. So while impossible to be completely satisfied, this would be my list today:
1. Moonflower – Carlos Santana: His songs and guitar riffs are amazing. You can close your eyes and go somewhere, which is perfect on an island. Being a double disc is a bonus.
2. The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill – Lauryn Hill: Lauryn put her soul into this and I don’t care how much (or how little) she was involved in the creative process. It’s the perfect blend of Rap & R&B.
3. Illmatic – Nas: It’s Illmatic. But it’s also the best album by my favorite artist.
4. American Gangster – Jay-Z: Take the subject matter of Reasonable Doubt and the beats from The Blueprint and you get this album. “Say Hello” might as well be my theme song and it’s the only way Lil’ Wayne is coming along.
5. Ready to Die – The Notorious B.I.G.: Who’s the best? Biggie, Jay, or Nas? I’ll have plenty of time to decide. Maybe not the best choice with songs like “Suicidal Thoughts” & “Ready to Die,” but oh well. I need to finish memorizing the lyrics anyway.
6. Aquemini – Outkast: Probably the last time these two were on the same page during the recording process. Banger after banger, but Spottieottiedogalicious steals the show.
7. Sam’s Town – The Killers: Blame Guitar Hero, but it reminded me how much I like “When We Were Young.” This album has that ‘80′s vibe to it and I need a little dose of that .
8. Black Byrd – Donald Byrd: For “Flight Time” alone. Between WVKO using to kick off their nightly jazz block & my dad playing this album, I’ll always love that song. Plus what I said about Santana goes for Byrd with a trumpet.
9. Black on Both Sides – Mos Def: “Umi Says” & “Climb” can go on repeat for hours at a time. Just like Lauryn, it allows me to get some variety without giving up a whole rap album.
10. Internal Affairs – Pharoahe Monch: His wordplay is ridiculous. His voice is engaging and entertaining. To me this is a perfect album.
It would be different if I thought about it more or depending on my mood on a given day. So much with music is about where I’m at a certain time, that outside of a few albums I’m prone to lean more toward what I’m listening to at the time.
But that’s me. What would your list be?
Pick ten albums & throw them in the comments. You can rack your brain if you want, but I spent about five minutes. As you can see with my #1, double albums will count as one for this. Other than that, get to picking.
I won’t judge if you won’t…

10. Confessions
I’m glad to see Big Fam & Trevor posted Jigga’s Vol. 3. I’m also happy to see Internal Affairs posted by MZ. I thought I was the only person who thinks that’s the greatest album ever.
1) Internal Affairs – Pharoahe Monch
- If you listen through this album carefully and tell me you can find me a slicker lyricist than Pharoahe Monch, I will be glad to stab you in the jaw.
2) VOL. 3 : The Life & Times of Shawn Carter – Jay Z
- “Dope Man”, “There’s Been A Murder”, “So Ghetto”, “Hova Song (Intro & Outro)”. This album had a handful of TERRIBLE songs, but at the same time had arguably the greatest verse in the history of hip hop on the third of “Dope Man”. Stop sleeping and think for yourself. “… i’m the illest nigga doin’ it, ’til you prove me wrong…”
3) The Battle of Los Angeles – Rage Against The Machine
4) Blueprint² – Jay Z
- Again, many weak pieces, but the irreplaceble “Meet The Parents”, “Ballad For A Fallen Soldier” & “Blueprint 2″. Besides, the other pieces, while maybe not the greatest rap records of all time, I could spin through again and again.
5) Black On Both Sides – Mos Def
6) The New Danger – Mos Def
- Completely underappreciated. “Grown Man Business” was a gem, with Mos spitting “… searching for the truth, leafin’ through the holy tablets / the Bible, the Qur’an, or the Ten Crack Commandments…”, and the non rap pieces remain great music nonetheless.
7) The Marshall Mathers LP – Eminem
- Em’s wordplay on “Drug Ballad” was simply incredible, and the man’s insight and observation come to fruition on “Who Knew” like they did on Jigga’s “Renegade”. “I’m Just Marshall Mathers” took a serious bite out of anybody/thing that’s ever rubbed him the wrong way, yeeesh…
8) Like Water For Chocolate – Common
9) Let’s Get Free – dEAD pREZ
10) Blueprint – Jay Z
********************
If that list were to include French hip hop albums as well, the following 3 would’ve definitely made the list.
1) La main sur le coeur – Sinik
2) Pour les quartiers [MIXTAPE] – Bakar
3) Panthéon – Booba

5. Isley Brothers- 3+3
6. Mother’s Finest-LIVE
7. Cee-Lo-Soul Machine
8. Patstor Troy -I Declare We Are Ready bootleg
9. A-Town Slowed Down
10. Miles Davis-Kind of Blue
Greums, maman Française, papa Chinois, j’habite au Canada.
Bakar’s flow may be awkward, but his substance is outstanding. That mixtape really lifted my heart with some great great records. Him ripping it through I can’t even count how many bars on “Classic”, spitting “… combien de mères en pleurs? combien de frères en taule? combien de familles nombreuses dans une petite piaule?”
It’s was a solid piece of work, well produced, and “Nique le système” is one of my favourite records of all time in either language.
It’s not like I ignore the greats. You talk about my favorite rappers, you talk about Sinik, Médine & Tunisiano. Sinik’s commercial success have some people shrugging him off, but he’s got so many quotable bars, I can’t even begin to recount them all. His wordplay and grasp of the language combined with the transparent hate in everything he writes make him one of the best rappers on the planet. I could probably stick all three of his albums in my top 10.
Médine’s another dude I love to listen to, but can only take in doses. A whole Médine album is hard to just bump, because he’s got so much to say, you really need to be prepped for a lesson and ready to really listen, that’s why “Le 11 septembre” didn’t make my list.
Tunisiano needs to put out more solo work, but I love his character, how he’s so unapologetically not a hip hop standard, but still so talented. Still so descriptive, and “Brule” is my favorite record of all time due to a great joint effort by the unit as a whole. “… esclavage est mental et modernisé. vous nous machez sur la gueule, vous nous méprisez…”
I came up on 113, because one of my buddies did the intro to “Tonton du bled” from their “Les princes de la ville” album. He’s the kid who says “Hé Tonton! Les cabayes sont trop lourdes! … ouais, empilez, il s’en va!”, met them at a concert back in Algeria when he was young and recorded it there.
So yeah, I’m not just picking at whatever I can find, I’ve come up listening to French hip hop as there’s real substance that’s lacking from the popular American hip hop. I know the genre, I know the artists, and I like Bakar with good reason. I’m aware that Booba is lacking in the substance department too, but he shows flashes of brilliance. “… trop de larmes pour que le tier-kar cesse le feu…”, that Panthéon album was great despite what some people said about it, because even with his depiction of skanks on “Baby”, he rips it on his second verse. “Temps Mort” is one of my favorite albums too.
1.It Was Written-NaS (one of the most underated albums in history)
2. Illmatic-NaS (Greatest hiphop album of alltime by my favorite artist but not my favorite album of his it was written is)
3. Me Against The World-2pac (classic can’t go a couple of days without listining to this album)
4. The College Dropout-Kanye West (one of the best rap debuts ever and in my opinion kanye’s best record)
5. The Don Killumanti-Makaveli(2pac) ( the exact opposite of me against the world but still shows that raw emotion and some of pac’s best lyricism)
6. Stillmatic-NaS-(Greatest comeback unbelievable record but it isn’t even his second best record and he even made jay-z look like a bitch while getting a second five mics, even though it should be four)
7. The Cool-Lupe Fiasco-(One of my favorite record he can make complicated rhymes easy to understand & it has Paris,Toyko, the Die and Gotta Eat where he compares fast food to crime).
8. The Life After Death-Biggie (hard not 2 put his 1st one instead but i like it because its darker and the word play is crazy & has some of my favorite cuts Somebodys Gotta Die, Long Kiss Goodnight & sky the limit)
9. The Marshall Mathers LP-Eminem (One of the best 2nd records ever along with the life after death, the college dropout , & it was written. He isn;t afraid to offend.
10. The Score-The Fugees-(One of the oddest rap albums ever but dope
and it has one of my favorite rap songs Fu-Gee-La
1. ATCQ – Peoples intinctives travels and the paths of rythym (way too good)
2. The Roots – Illadelph Halflife
3. Slum Village – Fantastic Volume 1, volume 2 is good, but 1 is raw as shittttttt.
4. De La Soul – Stakes is High
5. Digable Planets -Reachin, rebirth of slick rick=dope
6. Dr. dre – 2001
7. The Fugees – the score
8. J Dilla – either Ruff Draft or Donuts, maybe the shinin
9. Common – Resurrection (comm sense at his finest)
10. Mos Def – black on both sides
honorable mention: nas illmatic, Jay-z reasonable doubt, biggie ready to die, aquemini and atliens and southernplayaaa, pharcyde labcabin california, pink floyd dark side of the moon(if i had some mushrooms), do you want more!!??!!?!, ATCQ the anthology…
