Joell Ortiz – Top Of The Charts
AUDIO By Gotty™ on February 11, 2008 at 11:49 amWhen I get emails from the Crew & readers telling me to listen to a track, I try to get them to give me a short description/reason to listen…
Pic By Bo Pee
“Thugs are somewhere doing what it is that thugs do
Rappers are rapping and you ain’t doing that: what the fuck are you?
You’re nothing, you’re fronting, you’re stuffing on Thanksgiving.
My tummy is hurting, I’ll put you on a plate, listen.
I’m making it hard, like a blowjob with great rhythm.
(voice): Aiyo, Joell, calm down.
(Joell): “Nah, I aint even tryin to play with em.”
Contraâ„¢ then said…
“I literally got up and did that old school fist over the mouth holler we’d do when a cypher got wild….
..in the office.”

I generally feel like I’m always missing the boat on this dude, but that quote looks like the fucking hot sauce. And that’s a hell of an endorsement from Contra, so I’m hoping to finally jump on this wagon, lol, since everyone on TSS seems to be digging the ride so much.
Also, and this is completely unrelated, but I stayed up all night working on a paper, bumping the hardest shit I could think of for motivation, and at about 4am took a break. That Plies ‘I Just Want the Paper’ off his Drama tape was playing, and idk if it was exhaustion or what, but I took a good half hour breaking it down to my girl, trying to explain why it’s such a tight song… and she fucking got it.
Just felt like sharing a little bit of rap-nerd triumph with you. Not every day that you can convince your squeeze, who is a bigger Teegan and Sarah fan than anything, about the relevance of a prison-hop hero like Plies, you know?
Sir G, the font got italicized
^ Yeah, just fixed it. Shit happens for some fuckin reason.
Anyways…
Joell Ortiz_The Re-Up (Back to the Bodega)
Pretty damn good. Give it a spin. The track mentioned & NYC = reee-peat spins.
LOL @ “prison-hop”
Ortiz got it on lock for ‘08, don’t sleep on this guy. His new Big Mike hosted mixtape is dropping soon.
* does the sour face for 3 mins
LOL at “..in the office.”
i been tellin cats about Joell since Street Bangers Vol 5…
dude has the talent- now he just needs label support
i’ve liked joell since i heard him on that flex freestyle last year.
i think it was flex.
“there’s 2 things you gone remember when i’m done / number 1: i’m the man / number 2: don’t forget number 1″
not verbatim, but that got me there.
Ortiz is so “The Truth” that it’s almost gotten corny to keep praising the man. All I gotta say is that it was a loooooooong time before any rapper made me hit the rewind button until I heard “125 Grams pt. 2.”
Anybody heard of this dude Wax, someone sent me some youtubes of dude hes not bad, guess hes been around a lil while?

“In the back of a stolen kia,
roll a tree and watch out for the policia”
yeah a label support and the good selection of beats to make a masterpiece! … because talent and buzz, now, do not completely make any more the difference… it is really necessary to innovate, considering the number of albums which leave! (I speak about the underground market) U need a real structure and conception! but Ortiz is the real rookie of the year for his album! after Saigon, soon!
Jo Ell Quickman ina buildin’ ! 08 The Brick !!!!
(maybe a Rawkus comeback)

hey be lund, you don’t wanna link that plies joint? i can’t find it. or anyone wanna drop that on zshare?
Veego, I’m stuck in the library right now and then class, but I’ll try to up it in a post soon here. I don’t have the software to put shit in a .rar, but I’ll up the individual song. The shit bangs.
“I will finish n!&&@s careers with 3 fingertips…thumb, index and middle.” Dude is for real. And to think we co-sign rappers with 1/3 of the skill. Oh and a little off topic; Why don’t rappers get at Jimmy Iovine the same way they get at Jay for his CEO ability. Remember: No Joell album, Rakim album, King Tee’s album from some yrs back. Correct me if I’m wrong.
@Vegasmike – Never heard of dude til today but son is nice…goofy style but he got dope punchlines
I like this joint…. thanks for the heads up on this one.
I remember the first time I heard Joell. I forget the name of the song but it was off Kool G Rap’s -The Giancana Story. He (Joell) was doing the hook on one of the tracks, I mean, it wasn’t nothing to get too hype over, but the thought of Joell and G doing a track where Joell’s portion consists of more than a hook is almost mouth watering. Joell is indeed the truth.
“I’m like a house on the sun/ In front of the fireplace, with the heat on a million and one/ The young man is hot/
Joell has way too many quotables it is almost disrespectful to try and quote all of them. Just put “The Brick” and “The Re-Up” on REPEAT…
