The Breaking Album CoverWritten by Drew Ricketts

The age of the album is supposedly over.

After the hoopla about an album’s release, pitting it against peers for a stretch and the eventual disappointment, hip-hop fans are dismayed by the lack of quality albums. Mixtapes and other hodgepodges of singles make more sense to us now. Cavalier, of Brooklyn West Indian heritage, offers an album in the midst of this drought.

Conscious of Freehiphopnow describes it as on par with classics. Strong words. Words I co-sign wholeheartedly. From its Intro (“Treble Death”) to its subtle bangers (“Straight Cheeze”), The Breaking is a deeply personal, disturbingly poetic album. There’s nothing half-done or left to the imagination. It listens as if a diary of an unknown emcee comes to light just in the nick of time. Other than Graduation, I haven’t heard such a sonically cohesive album in recent years. Returning to the signature sound format, Cavalier has employed two in-house producers from The Dugout to craft the entire sound. Rather than lavish more praises, the download and the ensuing iPod session will say all that needs to be said.
