Monday at the annual MIDEM music conference, the world’s largest music industry trade fair held in Cannes, the industry quietly put its support behind the release of QTRAX. It is the first legal P2P service and has support from all four of the major labels (EMI, SonyBMG, Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group). Music labels still support CD’s, but see this as more of a way for the labels to lessen their dependence on Apple & iTunes. However, it seems that none of four labels had signed on the dotted line before Monday’s big release party. In light of this development; CEO Allan Klepfisz had this to say:

“As the world’s first free and legal P2P service that has chosen to spend 4.5 years on licensing and not to violate IP rights, we have decided that we will provide activation keys shortly upon final execution of all pertinent contracts.”

So in reality, QTRAX is another iTunes or Winamp at the moment because it has no content available for download and no timetable for when it will. There are a few other issues that could have affected the launch, but they pale in comparison to the fact that you can’t even use it for its intended purpose.

Sorry to hurt your feelings, but it looks like you’ll be stuck with the TSS crew, Stray Shots & Loosies, at least for the time being. Of course, not that those are bad things.
