Notable Quotable - Nas’ “Let There Be Light”
AUDIO By Beware on January 30, 2008 at 9:25 am
“The son of the audio cassette era/Tech wearer
Bullets and begets, Benz Bose speaker terror
Demand I get mine till I’m dead, so I can drive somethin’ red
Like that horse standing on it’s hind legs
Since Arnold and Willis in they bunk beds
I wanted bread like Wonder/
Not Ned The Whino, like the parents of Lionel
Nas is the Ghetto American Idol
No matter what you do, you’re never gettin’ my title
I can’t sound smart ‘cause yall’ll run away
They say I ain’t hungry no more and I don’t talk about yay
Like there’s no other way for an ex-hustler
Cake getta,’ ex-wig splitter to touch ‘ya/ I beg to differ
When you’re four years into the game, we can have a conversation
Eight years in the game, I invite you on vacation
Ten years in the game, after I’ve enjoyed my fame
Only then I let you pick my brain, niggas”
Every year and a half or so, Nas supplements the fiends with a new disc of crack.
Depending on his mood, which is perpetually reflected through his content, listeners either pan or praise the effort. Despite something of a detrimental mindset on his last album, the conceptual Hip-Hop Is Dead was a renowned hit for fans and professional pen pushers alike. Through intuitive concepts, justifiable name-dropping and warranted lyrics like the ones above, he proved he could please all parties with his continual reinvention.
Making noise with the album name alone, the Steve Yzerman of hip-hop was due to add to his Sears Christmas catalog of material late last year with his ninth studio album, tentatively-titled N*gger.
Yet, because of the shit fit activists threw when the name was announced, we’re still waiting for that first single in a Loosies file. Not only that, but the street single or, basically, even the slightest slice of news in general. Such a pity because despite his constant cultivation of self and outward enlightenment towards everyone of his fans, that single word is the sole issue hindering the highly anticipated release.
Apparently, attaining your artistic freedom still has its drawbacks.

^ love that.
new Nas *rubbing hands together*
was just about to link that Think Differently
damn y’all are good…
the second coming !
Nasty Nas is back!!! NIGGER COMING SOON!!! I hope the title sticks, can’t wait to go to HMV and ask “do you have the NIGGER album in yet?”; I don’t know how the sales clerk is going to answer that one! LOL!!!
I hope the album keeps the name too. On another note though, anybody holding some Morris Day and The Time? That Prince drop got me walking around like “Somebody bring me a mirror!”

Nas is so talented.
“I can’t sound smart ‘cause yall’ll run away”
Sad but true. They’d rather “Superman that Hoe” then listen to the real. “Nigger” got everyone in the Island Def Jam building shook. Especially LA Reid. It’s messed up that they’re ready to put the big push behind a cat like Rocko but We’ve yet to get a single from Nas.
Co-sign on Amp’s post. I think one of the real issues there is the fact that the “people”, your Average Joe Lowest Common Denominator wants to do the Souljah Boy, but they don’t want to listen to serious, thought provoking music. Who wants to actually THINK these days, anyway?
Lyrically no 1 can touch Nasir Jones. Listen to HHID then listen to Illmatic and u can tell the boy’s always had if u didn’t know
^ True, but Nas’ biggest drawback will always be, as someone said recently, his “tin ear for beats” lol

Im not sure the Steve Yzerman comp is vaild, but they did will both be forever linked to 1994…Nas with Illmatic and Stevie Y on NHL ‘94 for the the Sega Genesis.

^Combine that with His tendancy to sometimes be overly ambitious/simplistic with His song concepts and sometimes the results aren’t pretty.”Who Killed It?” is one of His biggest missteps. Almost unbearable to listen to. And “Braveheart Party”. And “Smokin”. And the majority of “Nastradamus”. And so on & so on. But when He’s firing on all cylinders, nobody’s better with the pen & the pad. His sleeper, “Street’s Disciple” was ill but alot of songs went over the typical Hip Hoppers heads. Grown Man music.

That Rakim joint isn’t even a song. It’s a book report set to music lol. You gotta give it to Nas though, not many MC’s would have the cojones to actually do that, paying homage to one of His idols. Still sucked though lol.
I agree with Amp, “Streets Disciple” was terribly slept on for unknown reasons. It’s one of those albums where you go back and listen to it after a while and you think to yourself “what the fuck??!! this shit is crazy!!!”. He touched on mad issues with that album man, definitely ahead of his time with that shit.

Who Killed It? will be the biggest slept on track in music ever, simply cus people couldn’t get over his voice. It is one of the most amazing tracks there is, period. When has nas ever had a simple concept?
Nice Yzerman reference, made me laugh.
@ Patrick…
While he is a mainstay like Stevie Y, and mad consistent, i was actually referring more to the chipped tooth.
@ Ampgeez…
I LOVE “Who killed it?” i actually like it the bnetter than the song i wrote about, and thats my jam. “Killed It” is such a detailed and thought provoking concept, i dont see how any intelligent person couldnt like it. (not to say youre not intell., its just makes you think ya, ya know?)
@Boogie
I preciate the drop man!
kats need to go over this beat hangup… Nas creates pictures… it’s like Ras said “f%$# a beat.. i’m a lyricist”… i appreciate the fact that he goes leftfield with his beats… besides, any true artist makes music first and foremost to please themselves… you can’t please the masses… just look what music has come to by doing that… no need to name these artist.. we all know who they are and what they’ve done to music…
dude i remeber whne i heard ‘rewind’ that was my shit for a min.
got the title on the head for this post, i think nas is full of notable quotables…@ that ’smokin’ track used to always quote the hook while we was bout 2 blaze. and to this day i still knock on my homie door, and when he dont get up 2 get it, i call him and be like ‘outside right we’.
good read, thank tss.
yeah, “Who killed it” was classic… not to get on the Nas vs. Jay thing (that’s already been killed) but that’s what places Nas on such a higher level.. he experiments.. Jay hasn’t really made that move where people might be like “dude changing lanes”.. he keeps it safe.. that aint music… that’s bowing to the masses… Nas is just on another level of music than these kats… it’s a few others out there but Nas sets the bar…
^ good point as far as Nas setting the bar, but as far as the beat issue goes, always remember it’s Hip-Hop & SHOW business, and in a genre that gets its sounds pumped LOUD outta cars, stereos, etc, the beat has always been an important component.
- Nas fan
@FLEA
I already bug my one friend who works at the square one, one. lol.

———————————-
Are these cats serious?
one.eye.deer… i understand where you’re coming from.. i guess that’s why everyone wanted to see Nas and Primo do a complete album together… looks like that will never happen
lol @ Amp
@ Amp… VERY SERIOUS
I happen to be a major fan of hard-boiled detective stories as I could tell from that track Nas might be also so for me that was so far and above anything I thought it could be.
But it wasn’t for everyone and thats and acknowledgment that even those who liked the song could give you.
Then again I was all for most of Andre3000 getting his sing on for a second.
Could anyone kindly post PANDEMONIUM By THE TIME… is the only album “missing” from this excellent band…
Thanks in advance
