Fresh For ‘08!
AUDIO By Gotty™ on January 7, 2008 at 7:37 amHere’s your Monday morning e-hip-hop news roundup…
Beans & Free recently, spoke on their unhappiness with Def Jam to Whoo Kid. To which, reader Vdot responded by sending me this email…
I’m sure you’ve heard about Free & Beans complaining about lack of promotion and blah blah blah. Regardless if these niggas had 5 billboards in every major city & small town in the US, they still wouldn’t have sold anything. People like them belong on indie labels. They are not superstars. They’re not MSG status or Nokia Theatre status or even Highline Ballroom status. They’re BB Kings Bar & Grill status.
Plus, I check out Ticketmaster everyday and I’ve never seen anything about Freeway & Beans doing shows. Niggas need a Youtube channel & myspace account and keep it moving. Both of them look like they don’t even have an email address.

Dr. Dre has partnered up with Jimmy Iovine & Monster to release some heaphones.
“Beats by Dr. Dre” headphones will come in a carrying case with anti-microbial cleaning cloths, a special Monster headphone cable, a mini-stereo to ¼-inch stereo cable adapter, as well as Monster’s iSonitalk, a microphone/headphone adapter for iPhones. Beats will be available in spring 2008 for a suggested retail price of $399.95.
Thanks but my lil earbuds that came with my iPod work fine & are so much cooler & easily recognizable. And no where in the article was Detox mentioned. Note to Dre – We don’t want to hear shit about new endeavors, artists or projects until we hear the words “Detox will be in stores __________ (enter cemented date here).”

Vdot said it best.
Free & Beans need to get State Property back together, give Dame Dash a call, and go independent for 2008.
I’m a fan of both these dudes, not a big fan, but I check for all they projects and they do put out solid albums. But like dude said, they not superstars. And without the Roc-A-Fella machine behind them, they gonna really need to get on the grind to sell some discs.
Are these artists as dumb as they appear?? Though we (fans) may go overboard with the “armchair A&R” thing, it seems we are more in touch with the marketplace than the artists. The industry has changed. Labels won’t put money behind mid-level artists (Free, Beans, etc.). Stop depending on someone else for your hustle. Rappers get wise to what’s going on. It’s not all Jay’s fault.
P.S. And stop going on Whoo Kid with these whining interviews. It’s not a good look.
No lie, them headphones would work in the studio, though.
And if Beans and Free went independent, they’d sell a third of what they just did. (ie. Cam’Ron)

I don’t know if dame is the answer but shit yea drop a new SP album. That shit was fire
I agree with Vdot…..now that Young Hov is gone who are these rappers going to blame now….this shit has been happing for years…a cat make a brick for a record and blame promotion…no one show up at the shows..they blame promotion
@ Darius: Hey selling 1/3 indie is better than flopping on a major my dude.
@ B. Payton: When State Prop, Beans, Young Gunz were selling at the height of the Rocafella dynasty it was Dame who was helping make the power moves, NOT Jay. I feel they need the right machine behind them and I believe Dame is the man for the job. Might not work magic, but it’s worth a try.
You gotta understand with beans & free, they lived the superstar lifestyle even though they weren’t superstars per say. Once you get a taste of that it’s hard to go back. With Jay gone, why would they want to be at Def Jam/Roc-A-Fella? Jay’s rumored to be starting a new label, they’ll get shelved like Redman.
In the end of the day, it isnt the promotional teams name on your album. As artist they have to set up and make sure things are running right. It is too easy to blame everyone else but yourself. Hell the only time I have heard about either Freeway or Beans doing an interview lately is to bitch and moan. This isnt to excuse the job Jay did in his time as president; when it comes to hip hop he did a terrible job.
Damn no house is safe anymore. Dame and Jay split, Then G-unit was on the verge of losin Buck and Fif put Banks on punishment. Cam and Jim haven’t talked in like 2yrs. J-Hood splits with Dblock and starts puttin out diss mixtapes. Now State P is on the verge or waring w/ Jay.
^^^Hommie above. You can’t say Jay jus did a terrible job. He’s had success and failures and Pres. Luda sold, Ye sold, Ross sold, Santana went gold, Fab sold twice, Jeezy sold twice. He didn’t shit on hip hop,its just the times. 2003 50 sold like 10mill. Now he’s under 2, and thats 50cent. If he didn’t drop “I get money” and ran with the first 2 singles, he woulda flopped
@ darius they’d sell a third of the discs but they’d make a whole lot more money
cell said it best.
people need to start taking responsibility for their own failures.
if you flopped, you flopped.
they got promotion, beans had a song with r.kelly, had it debuted on 106 and everything, had a video, and other vids, and still didn’t sell.
free got shit out, but people not gone buy his album cause he fell off the radar, he hasn’t mad an album since i was like a sophmore in high school, and i am a junior in college.
smh at jay’s own dudes going at him now.
they wasn’t saying shit when they were on stage with him at vegas.
@CELL: Runaway Love saved Luda’s album, if it wasn’t for that song his album would have flopped and still when the song caught fire Def Jam still didn’t put any muscle behind it. Unlike when Robin Thicke put out Lost without you, before that single took off, his album wasn’t doing well despite how good the album was. But when Lost without you took off; his record label made sure to put out new print, radio, and TV ads stating his album is in stores with the SMASH HIT LOST WITHOUT YOU. Hell I think they even reissued the album with a couple of bonus tracks. Def Jam hasn’t had the foresight under his presidency. Santana did go gold; but was that due to Def Jam working the record or due to Dipset’s promotion of their crew. Say what you want about them, they do promote their artist. Jeezy has stated in article in XXL that CTE did the promotions on his albums. Dame Dash when he was still with Roc-A-Fella made the same claims about Def Jam, taking credit for promotion that Roc-A-fella did. Method Man’s 4,3,2,1 album was hands down his best work from the first track till the last, the album received no support from Def Jam. Red Man’s Red gone wild was a solid album and it received no support. I do agree with you that it is harder for artist to sell in the states. But the lack of support Def Jam has shown the majority of their Hip Hop artist is alarming. These are my reason for saying he did a poor job with hip hop during his time as president.
jay didn’t do a poor job, its just the simple fact that times are changing.
hip hop had the worst year in terms of sells ever in 06.
from what i know, every artist isn’t a def jam artist.
underdig?
so that means, it didnt matter the prez, the promotion, the hits, niggas wasn’t buying hip hop period.
07 it was a little better, but people still don’t buy hip hop albums.
period.
just get over it people.
stop trying to blame somebody for everything.
that’s one of the main problems with black people to this day.
quote me.
emike: True music of all genres are having a hard time selling; but that doesn’t excuse record labels not doing their job. Why even pay any music executive’s salary if that’s the case. We can’t sell music in this day and age let us not do anything, isn’t going to solve the problem. Now I can’t stand here and Blame every misstep at Def Jam or any record label on their executives. But cases such as Def Jam not putting out a video for that Freeway/Jay-z joint that was killing this summer, some blame has to fall on Jay’s shoulders. I don’t know there have been too many times during his run of not striking when the iron is hot. I do agree with you that the artist have to start taking an active role in their careers and stop wasting their energy with attacking the labels. Right or wrong no matter how many times you diss Jay-Z, its your name on the album not his. If you see the label not doing something take it upon yourself and get it done. Book your own shows, pay for your own vids, etc.
i agree.
but yea all music sells are down, but hip hop sells are suffering the most, and it is not because of one person, or one label.
we don’t see none of the g-unit niggas getting mad at 50 cause they last albums flopped, no.
do people really expect for ghost, meth, red, freeway, beans, the roots (who are notorious for not selling records, so they gain all revenue through tours), and a washed up LL to go gold or platinum in this 07/08?
no.
fuck being real, let’s be realistic!
Those artist on G-unit are just as mad; they just can’t voice their opinions because if they said anything slick, they would be homless. You know 50’s name is on their homes. LOL!!!!
yeah my lil lady had 106 and pk on when they premiered that r.kelly joint.
beans seemed outta place in the vid and in that studio with a buncha screamingass kids in bleachers. ha.
like a guy that ended up at the prom on his way to the 10year reunion but stayed and hung out anyway….
yo gotti i don’t know how u can fuck with those white earbud jawns …. fuck 400 for phones these are only $30 and dont suck.

Free has that generic as video …and i wasnt feelin his ablum at all…some of his best tracks he did in 07 didnt even make the album….I wasnt vibin with the Beans either and i usually like his stuff for the most part…if all else false blame jay…and didnt 50 have alot 2 do with Free’s album? O and who gives a fuck bout state property…i know i dont and never did so they need 2 stay apart…
@Biggga,
Luda not having a buzz until runaway girl is Ludas fault, He had promotion and single (Money Maker) w/ Pharrell, but he needed to come harder. But people were well aware that Luda was out. What did the Dips do to push Santana? I don’t remember Cam or Jimmy pushin Juelz. Meth, Red are my dudes for life. But times are fuckin different, whereas in the past they drop music and people knew it, now if you one of the “HOT” mc’s u gotta grind it urself cause neither Def Jam, Sony, Interscope whoever is gonna invest money in the this day and age into artist that they’re not gonna get a return on.
