One day, two boys under fifteen are being charged with sexual assault on an elderly woman, and the next Plies’ manager is caught with enough coke to supply a Hollywood soiree of yay, all the while the credibility of America’s Pastime is fading before our eyes because of drugs.

While each of these despicable stories revolve around completely different problems, all of them further emphasize the gradual downfall of our society. It seems hasty, but realistically, depending on where you live, d’evils are either running rampant or on their way.

Since I act respectfully to myself and my surroundings 98% of the time, all I can do is stick to the script and spread the good word. For this dire situation, though, a song seems to be proper sentiment.

Particularly pertaining to the topic of societal ills is the new track, “Slow Down,” from Wyclef’s critically acclaimed new album, Carnival II: Memoirs of an Immigrant.

Accompanied by an incarcerated Cliff Harris, who actually addresses his current trial and tribulations, Clef fills this melodious song full of as many reciprocal insights as compelling guitar riffs. Through his wailing vocals and simple metaphors, the former Fugees front man constructively spins our country’s current state of paranoia and contempt into a beautifully crafted piece of enlightenment. Addressing everything from Katrina to nuclear testing, the song is meant to serve as reminder that no matter how careless we become as a whole, we should never give up our individual hope.

Let’s hope Wyclef has the insight to turn this into a single. If more songs projected the same positive message, we’d be that much better off.
