Instead, we’ll be elsewhere…with Home Box Office, the police & some West Baltimore mopes.
As the fifth and final season of The Wire begins, I’m happy to say I was there when it first started. Flipping channels on my chipped out cable box, I stumble across the last approximately thirty to forty minutes of the very first episode and my phone has been off every Sunday since any time an episode was on.
I was one of those who raved & bought into “man it’s showing how intricate this drug shit is” when Season Two was airing and others were knocking it because they weren’t in the bricks, panning in on Bodie, D’Angelo and Pooh serving from the orange couch. I still feel conflicted when I say that my favorite characters from the show are Robin Hood-type homosexual (Omar), a cop (McNutty) and a man who took the charge for nearly twenty murders for a sandwich with horseradish. I still get amped & start moving forward in my seat when Omar whistles that Elmer Fudd song, as if it was the first time.
So when Johnny-Come-Latelys - be they friends, the media or award groups - speak on the show, I just smile. I’ve already “walked through the garden” and keep going back.
I’ve got the first three seasons sitting downstairs in the DVD rack, covered in dust like old library books. And soon, I’ll have four…and then, reluctantly, be completing my collection with Season Five.

I’ve been watching since S1E1 as well… I luckily bit into the marketing of the show when seeing some of the promotional ads on HBO before it aired…. Moms & Pops watched that joint with me and have been hooked since too. Looking forward to season 5.

i ain’t gonna lie, i pick up some stations on my HD reciever, and the show was on one day. got kinda pulled in. a good friend i found out had all the dvd’s, so i borrowed season 1, 2, & 3. then waited patiently for season 4. this show is incredible. marlowe is going down, after bodie’s death, i was speechless. last thing i ever thought is i would be rooting for omar. great writing and anyone who doesn’t watch this show and thinks Sopranos is better has lost their mind.
Already catching heat for not checking this show, but i will redeem myself and catchup.

Amen on that Sopranos part. Sopranos lost alot of the violence & cutting edge that it had early on. I understand what they were doing in developing characters, analyzing them etc, but it just wasn’t as good the last few seasons.
Maybe it’s kinda good that The Wire will be going out “on top” of sorts b/c they’re still pushing their agenda & making it entertaining, just like they were w/S1.
first five lines had me tearing up til I continued reading. “whew!”…
man listen, the wire is to me, what friends was to somebody I prolly don’t get along with.
HOW CAN YOU NOT watch the wire and not be hooked? non-cipher.
the fact that this show isn’t nationally praised tells you all you need to know about the true status of race relations in this countrym

I caught on to The Wire just recently…it is without a doubt the best show out. Fa frickin’ shizzle.

Yea its my favorite show. Snoop is hilarious one of my favorite characters along with Bodie (RIP). I want to know if there still following the four kids in this season because the last episode on season four didnt answer a lot of questions about them.

the UK is always late so I had to piece together season 4 with downloads, youtube and TVlinks.com (RIP) so a purchase will be made when it drops on DVD in the new year. The ending had me so amped. I’m glad the year has gone so quick, just the fact to hurry up the new season.

Season 5 starts at midnight for people with HBO On Demand. HBO is still putting the episodes up a week early.
could never get into the wire..dunno why just couldnt. i quess escaping the realities of real life cant be fulfilled by real life shituations presented as a show and or entertainment
one.eye.deer, i agree. it does say alot about race relations. alot of white people don’t watch the show. don’t get me wrong, i was having a conversation with a 55 year old lawyer about it the other day, some do.but i think older white folks feel detatched from african american youth. they feel like if they don’t know how comment or don’ understand what bubbs is talking about when he lifts the cops shoes and says something about “dead soliders” or why everyone calls the cops narcos, they are not “cool”, at the same time it questions if they even care. i don’t know just somethin g to think about.

Ive never watched one episode of this show….EVER.
Is it really that good? I been wantin to peep it…I aint had HBO in a minuite I wish I had a way to dl the whole series in a few DL’s. I remember last year I couldnt even get lined up without hearing niggas trippin of the previous ep…

I read a spoiler to get word about Avon; but he’s in this episode. I caught the news about Burrell by being observant; In the 26 min HBO special about the Show, there are several clips from S5. One of them shows Carcetti at the podium with the news ticker reading “Mayor comments on Police Commissioner’s retirement”.
