There’s always that one theme in hip hop that attempts to capture the psyche of the MC in a precarious psychological situation. It’s a glance that shows a pensive side in the midst of all of the normal verbal bravado. With “Walk Around,” Ghostface Killah may have created a track that embodies these elements and also will stand among similar classics like The Geto Boys’ “Mind Playin’ Tricks on Me” or Cypress Hill’s “Illusions.”

‘Walk Around’ begins with a bluesy feel that gives off all of the airs of a church confessional. Ghost sounds muted and lost to begin with, and his voice in these interludes is a key element. With each word, you realize that you’re getting a look into the emotional repercussions of murdering someone at point blank range right down to the echo of Ghost saying something else, overlapping his words at that moment. The imagery is all so vivid, and Ghost doesn’t fail to grab you by the collar and put your nose to the carnage with lines like “one to the face/so when he fell his nose stuck to my Padres.” It’s similar to the sequence in the film “Layer Cake” where Daniel Craig’s character continuously pops pills and downs booze after murdering his supplier.

Even when Ghost recovers his swagger at the end, you find yourself changed along with him. ‘Walk Around’ is a theatrical composition but it has enough reality to it to distinguish it from most of the other shoot ‘em up scenarios on wax.
