Am I seeing triples, or is XXL about to press three of the same unbuckled belt Weezy covers?
I personally like the mag and would happily subscribe if I didn’t lose those annoying inserts the second I copped an issue. But, plain & simple, they play favorites. This is Birdman Jr.’s third time gracing their cover in the past year.
As I’ve noted below, Young Money ain’t the only one who gets that superstar adulation & overexposure from YN’s monthly mag.
Jay-z – December ‘06, December
TI - March, July
Young Jeezy – January/February, June
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not “hatin’.”
As far as market share goes, they’re without a doubt the number one hip-hop publication out these days. However, their formula has been hittin’ snooze for about the past year now. Aside from their credibility catchall November issue, they take about as many chances as an acrophobic at Cedar Point.
Our Yellow Bro. Wilson better hope Julia Beverly doesn’t get a better distribution deal because Weezy can only say so much.
Rick Ross ft. Flo-Rida – Street money
Big Kuntry – How We Rock it
Bobby Valentino Ft. Roscoe & E-40- Live It Up Remix
Wu-Tang_Clan – Life_Changes-(ODB_Tribute)
I-15 – Lost in Love (Produced By Polow Da Don)
Rosco P Coldchain – Welcome Back
Obie Trice – Fallin (Shady Remix)
B.O.B. Ft. Rick Ross & Juvenile – Haterz (Remix)
AZ – A Better World

Video: Jay-Z & Beanie Sigel Perform Ignorant *$@%
http://realtalkny.rawkus.com/2007/11/topic/topic/concerts/video-jay-z-beanie-sigel-perform-ignorant-+*%+/
show BUSINESS… whatever sells copies. (unfortunately)
and a ho, ho, ho to to you too, Gotty… damn.
I see retail ain’t the only ones getting the holiday season started.
YN is lazy, but he does admit he’s only gonna put people on the cover whose proven to move units. It’ll be interessting to see what XXL does when it gets comp again. Because even though it’s #1, it’s still a shell of it’s former self.
Bobby Valentino Ft. Roscoe & E-40- Live It Up Remix
excellent….
Damn Gotty!! I need some of those Christmas Slow Jams!! Hey ya’ll don’t laugh but I’m at work and they don’t have the damn WINRar on this joint! Can someone up that in a zip file?? Damn I had to laugh at myself for that one…geesh!!
Yeah, YN & the good folks at XXL have gotten lazy. At least the Benzino led Source used to inspire XXL to put out good product. I don’t think they’re looking over their shoulders anymore. Even Wilson’s editorials seem to be missing the venom of old. Step your game up, XXL!!
Heltah Skeltah-Getcha Team

Lupe’s maybe buggin out a little:
“Perhaps the oddest song is ‘Gotta Eat,’ which is apparently written from the perspective of a cheeseburger and is rife with food/life metaphors.”
Now I finally got something to compare to Canibus as a rapping spermatoza
crazy – when they reported this on xxlmag.com, i had something to say …
i usually appreciate elliott wilson’s comments as an editor, but i can just imagine how this issue’s editor’s note is gonna read: he’ll talk about how all the other mags are gonna hate for the move he made, ad nauseum. but what about your readership? do you believe that they (we) are that stupid? the reason i can’t accept it this time is exactly why we’re talking about it – stop recycling!
The World According To Pretty Toney (snippet)
http://www.divshare.com/download/2765153-da7
Those three covers remind me why I stopped reading XXL so many years ago. Call me a hater, but they need to get off that man’s dick already. Damn.
Out of curiousity, what mags do people subscribe to or pick up on a regular basis & why?
I’ll start by saying I pick up…
Feds – ok writing @ best, but they usually bring some entertaining washed up or locked up criminal to the table.
Mass Appeal – eccentric choices & good writing.
Fader – ^ see Mass Appeal but w/a little more focus on solely music. The feel of that mofo & the pics always woo me lol.
Rolling Stone – wide coverage. Usually good, quick reads for the shitter.
Complex – good for laughs & to keep up w/all the hypebeast mat’l out.
I think I read more books & non-music periodicals (as far as actual subscriptions go) than anything.
I read Complex
-S.I.
-ESPN The Magazine
- Inc.
-Fast Company
Im done with music mags for the most part
XXL- Still the best rap mag out
The Source- Old habits die hard
Entertainment Weekly- All things media
Wizard- All things geek
FEDS/Don Diva-I usually cop whoever has the better cover story, but some months I get both.
KING- Depends on how hot the cover chick is
ho ho ho thx 4 the christmas cuts.
tss is major
Wayne. Over rated.
Christmas. It’s on. Thanks for the drops G.
Did Saigon’s Moral Of The Story drop yet?
I’m a big fan of URB. They expose me to alot of new underground mat’l.
Gotty, what’s good with a SS publication?? Could you see something like that in the not so distant future?? I think it’d be a very good look and something I’d like to be involved with.
juss rolling stone
@ Gotty.
-Complex (i enjoy the magazine, but not as much since i started visiting blogs and shit…thanks TSS!)
- Fader
-ESPN (self explanatory)
-URB
-ToyFare (gotta keep up with my GI Joes and shit)
…and Complex is the only one I subscribe too.
-King (self explanatory)
Toyfare, Complex, and King are the only ones that I subscribe too (mad cheap).
gotta keep up with my GI Joes and shit
==============
lol.
I like Wayne but I do think they Od’d on the cover
I forgot to mention Vibe. I still love their style of writing & the balance they keep. They don’t have that og crew of writers I grew up loving but still…
I rarely pick up The Source. I’ll fuck w/XXL over them any day.
I used to have a subscription to espn, but I’m one of those who has to read cover to cover & I couldn’t spend that much time like that.
Amp – I basically the same w/Don Diva & Feds. I think I got more copies of DD in the bathroom whereas I save a lot of copies of Feds.
A TSS mag? I think that’s more P’s thing than mine lol. Never would rule it out but I kinda like the speed & level of interaction/instant feedback of online shit.
Am I the only one subscribed to Newsweek lol?
While we’re @ it, let me just say I LOVE how cheap magazine subscriptions are. A year for as low as $7-12 is a deal like a mofo.
The ones I subscribe to:
EGM (the best mag about games ever)
Maximum PC (the best computer mag on the stands)
Men’s Health (gotta stay in shape…I guess)
Entertainment Weekly (they gave me 52 issues for $10, so I took that shit)
Ones I don’t subscribe to:
Consumer Reports (self explanatory)
Cosmopolitan (say whatever you want–if you don’t understand women, that’s the mag you need. Plus, it’ll put you onto all the games and tricks they use on us).
Gotty- Yeah, that’s where most of my D/D’s end up, too. I think FEDS usually has better articles.
The Source sux, but I still cop it from time to time. Trying to keep hope alive. I’m weaning myself off of it, though.
TSS works best as a website. I like being able to actually interact with the contributors & the sense of community. But the way XXL is slippin, there might be room in the market for a real Hip-Hop mag.
ooooooooooh, don’t get me started on tss as a print mag.
*excitementtttttttt*
ESPN > SI by eons
i had a subscription but im penny pinching ATM so it’s all gravy, ill read it at the supermarket or whatnot
I didnt like the whole trend of LeBron and Peyton articles at every turn but im feeling it now… so much DOPE shit in that mag
I cop XXL if I like two or three of the people featured in there. Atlantic Monthly and Esquire pretty much monthly. For the most part I like what’s going on in blogs more for new music type shit. I always open the magazine and the news seems old as hell.
side question – what does everyone think of that new Cam? I’ve had it playing all day, I think (and this surprises me) that it’s pretty dope.
XXL, Source ( less & less), Vibe, Complex, Fader, Sole Collector (fishscales in my vein like a picses), Sneaker Freaker, Billboard, Time (from work), Slam, ESPN, & whatever catches my eye at anytime. I don’t trust subscriptions anymore, so it’s a pretty expensive habit (but healthier than smoking).
Entertainment Weekly is cheap as hell, last subscription I had. I liked it and really don’t remember why I cut it off.
Cam’s joint surprised me too. Coulda been one CD though. And a little less Penz & Gist. No Juelz or Jimmy. I’m still not sure about the future of the Dips. Cam needs to stop using these cheap, no name beat makers & get a couple of real producers to lace him up. Last time Cam had real producers working with him was “Come Home With Me” which went platinum.
Sole Collector
Scratch (RIP)
Rolling Stone
Complex
Sneaker Freaker
S.I.
Maxim
Blender
Maxim & Blender used to be free like a mofo lol. Blender is always a good funny read.
I know & have known a lot of cats @ Sole Collector so I like what they’re doing, but it’s not a mag I just have to have. I do like to look @ it sometimes when I’m scanning the magazine racks though.
go green.
print is a dying media. right up there with radio.
it’s nice to have something on the john though.
for entertainment ish, it’s all digital for me, but i get my business on w/ forbes, inc, fortune, etc. in paper form.
i think the beauty of tss is the interaction. you lose that in print form. not to mention being mad late on most stories.
p.s. props for the cedar point mention. i miss that shit since i moved to the left coast.
The Source. Fck what U heard.
Baby’s baby got some stubby-ass fingers.
Damn, I didn’t even know they still made magazines!!! Ha Ha Ha!!! On the real, I stopped reading the Source after they started getting a little too lenient with the mic-rating system (5 mics for OutKast’s “Aquemini”? Fuck outta here!!!) XXL started out cool, but now they’re on some bullshit. I think music mags are pointless when you got sites like TSS killin’ shit. All I read is the newspaper & the Economist, I’m an investor so I gotta keep up on thangs.
Wale’ discography for y’all:
Paint A Picture
Hate Is The New Love
100 Miles And Runnin’

Aquemini IS 5 Mics. Do they sell Q-tips up there flea he he?

“Fuck XXL you’re a size too small, I should hire Eminem to kill you all”-B Real..The mag is fucking garbage.
Thanks for the Xmas joints…but “Christmas on Death Row”??? damm..can’t go there!!

LOL
TC you’re crazy, Aquemini isn’t a classic. Face facts homie. The Source only gave that album that rating because OutKast was puttin’ in work that year, so they were the most popular. Anyway, fuck a rating system let the streets decide.
magazines:
- complex
- xxl (although this issue got me questioning myself)
- vibe
- new york magazine
- the occasional gq, esquire, vanity fair
- after that, strictly the innernuts.
Jay-Z was the most popular when it dropped. (Vol. 2) what are U talkin’ bout?
@ Big Fonz – you’re good people for those Wale links.
Remember that if any others ever doubt you ;-)
Esquire – Don’t sleep. You gotta get your grownman on at sonme point.
XXL – Even tho they have been on autopilot for a good while now.
GQ
Scratch – R.I.P.
GQ & Esquire…I usually alternate b/w the two, depending on the month’s stories.
@ Flea
You couldv’e picked any other album or artist that gets too much credit…but Dat KAST…boi stop!!!
you almost got me fired for yelling out “Has this N*&% lost his damn mind”
do yourself a favor, brush off aquemini give it a listen…good music stand the test of time, maybe you were in a daze in 98′
as for XXL its obvious they’re dick riders BUT you could at least be creative with the covers. “whatever happened to standards, whatever happened to bear minimums” – Huey Freeman
All I can say when I step back and look at the game now is dam… I feel sorry for my son.
With my 1st son coming into this world all I can think is how I’m so going to try to keep him away from all this MTV/BET garbage???
It’s like horror films in Hollywood today. Everything has been done before so the end product of what comes out of these artist is beyond lame in my eyes. So I’ll stay stuck in the 90’s.
TC & Thugnificence need to reconsider what classic material is. Aquemini had it’s moments, I remember when it dropped because Jay-z’s “Hard Knock Life 2″ dropped and so did ATCQ’s “The Love Movement” the same day. My niggaz & I skipped class just to cop those shits and I’ll say it now like I said it back then: AQUEMINI IS NOT A FUCKING CLASSIC ALBUM!!! Listen to “The Love Movement” and tell me that ain’t dope. I like OutKast, but I think “ATLiens” was a better piece of work. Peace y’all.
ALL of Kast’s 1st 3 albums are classics.
@ Young/Sincere Rich – Thanks bro. I try to do what I can, when I can.
Elemental Magazine…R.I.P…… surprised no one mentioned it…
