“That R&B Love Triangle…”
GENERAL By Gotty™ on November 26, 2007 at 2:49 pm
“…When you out there kick-in it with the brothers/you don’t care about lovers.”
While in the barbershop the other day, one of the DJs cued up a dusty blend CD.
My ears were subject to several mediocre but bass-heavy tunes you’ve ever heard. I was hoping my barber would hurry up lining my mustache with the straight razor or slit my neck with the blade…and then Total’s “Kissing You” came through the speakers.
The crowd went wild.
Okay, that’s an overstatement. But since it wasn’t crowded, we all did hit a adolescent moment & humming along to the purely feminine song. As the ladies harmonized through the “yeah yeah yeah” part, I realized one thing…
R&B is dead; not hip-hop.
All in all, maybe it’s not R&B as a whole, but just the male singers who are stagnate. There’s just no foreplay being exercised. There’s no substance, no “lead-in” with the music. No “Can you woo woo woo?” but just straight fuckin. Raw dog, word to ODB.
As Jada touched on previously, it’s not there aren’t enough talented singers in the game @ the moment. It’s just that our fast-food mentality has transposed itself into the approach of most singers. When I listen to an album like Marvin’s I Want You, there’s a climb to a crescendo, musically, & if you’re timing is good, sexually as well.
I think it all really started with Jodeci’s decline in quality. On Forever My Lady, they woo’ed everyone into a frenzy…but didn’t overtly say something as Akon-esque as “I wanna fuck you.” But as they started to wane in popularity so did the quality of “babymaking music.”
Robert Kelly, the leading name in R&B, is one who isn’t breaking ground anymore. Instead, he’s choosing to try an one-up the vocal and thematic stylings of the young boys of the genre. Recently, he’s apparently mad @ Ne-Yo for outperforming him, thus kicking him off the tour. Chris Brown, one of the other leading voices in R&B, is still dancing his way across young girls dreams, but has yet to be fully accepted by adult audiences. T-Pain…I won’t even go there.
Pardon me while I cue up some Curtis Mayfield.

That’s one lucky kid!!! Look at his face, it’s like he’s in DisneyLand!!!
Yo Gotty when is the draw for the LB giveaway my dude?
Gotta love the NT pics.
Male R&B is a lost art for real.
Real talk Gotty. I get tired of cats “R. Kelly” singing (where they rap/sing or talk-sing). Shit’s annoying. Or that whispering ish. Chicks do it too. That’s why we honestly have more one hit wonders in R&B than hip-hop. Adn for the ones that can sing…no hit at all. That’s why I F’s with the classics.
*pops in The Spinners greatest hits*
And that pics is funny. I swear I hit…, I mean, I know that female.
I laughed when it said,
“Chris Brown, one of the leading voices”
R&B is missing the voices, and the writers, Babyfaces Brian McKnights etc. There has been some nice shit lately, but not in the light like a T-Pain or Chris Brown.
Ne-Yo and John Austin, even Beyonce got the writing down, IMO, but we need some more power in the vocals.
R&B been dying since New Jack Swing fell off.
A – I kinda typed this one on the fly so pardon that extreme statement lol. Prolly should’ve said a “leading figure”. In fact, i might edit that.
Johnta Austin, I’m fuckin w/. But even he falls into some of the same trappings when it comes to content.
Yo, anybody got any Drake? I been listening to dude on myspace, and it’s not even whack.
r kelly, ne-yo, and keyshia cole are coming here in a couple weeks. hopefully ne-yo’s entourage will leave the pepper spray at home.
Yo Gotty word to mom dukeski That ol school shit “I want you” -Marvin “Go for your guns” – The Isley Bros and that Teddy P………. Is in Heavy Rotation. I cant zone out to the new shit. Shout to Jodeci
Teddy Penderazdoun is all about the foreplay…he starts off by hollerin’ at the bar tender to buy a gyal a drank. The night just spins out of control from there.
The night just spins out of control from there.

lol
I’m diggin the dude who produces for Cassie. I forget his name, but just the energy He brings to hs productions has got me wanting to hear more. And of course Raheem Devaughn.
Note of interest: Saigon was actually gonna get K-Ci on his album until that man charged 40G’s.
http://paidandpopular.blogspot.com
T-Pain…I won’t even go there.
i can’t even understand people’s fascination with this guy. apparently he was a terrible rapper first and then became a singer, if you want to call him that. his popularity really reflects the taste of the general public right now, which is pretty horrible i think.
I’m diggin the dude who produces for Cassie. I forget his name
i believe it’s ryan leslie
Used to really dig Jagged Edge, but their content started to sound like that same ol “R&B Thug” ish. I blame the chicks who actually like that kinda stuff. J. Holiday’s joint was the same way.
And yeah, it is Ryan Leslie. Some of his YouTube clips are entertaining, but who knows if He’s got the goods or not.
JE Heartbreak = one of my favorite all time discs to get right with.
I only check for Chrisette Michele & Alicia Keys for R N B to be honest In my opinion they are the only Divas doing shit and their albums were great ironicly they both have the same album title. Apart from Ne-yo & possibly Akon R N B for males is quite poor Chris Browm ? T-Pain ? god help us possibly R.Kelly ? Usher ? who the fuck else ?
^I second that one, Gotty!
But those dudes haven’t made a decent album since “Hard”. Has the male R&B group been completely replaced by the “Boy Band”?
Justin Timberlake “The King Of R&B”? As much as I hate to say it, these days, it doesn’t sound too far fetched.

Ghostface’s bird is an eagle.
R&B has fallen off. Its a couple of artist that’s still soulful. Like Jill Scott, Raheem DeVaughn, Alicia Keyz, Anthony Hamilton & Joe. Did anyone listen to Raheem’s new CD Love Behind the Melody yet?
John Legend.
Didn’t see his name in the comments and knew it needed to be
Joe.
Angie Stone, Raphael Saadiq, Musiq, Jaheim
big doe rehab? anyone? pretty much all of next weeks releases are leaked already.
That 8 diagrams is yawn..Sound like someone farting in the breeze.
The Albums I told you all about a while back,
It’s 2 projects from Fine Print, from Lost Calligraphy out of Va. All I’ll Say is that it’s a completely different vibe than what you’ll usually hear.
darien brockington, tyler woods, dwele…
DILLAGENCE link:

John Legend
Chrisette Michelle
Alicia Keys
Anthony Hamilton
Lyfe Jennings
Ne-Yo
Those are the ones that still have albums in my iPod. I’m not a big fan of R&B but they make me love it.
I still have yet to listen to a whole Jill Scott CD…anyone wanna up their favorite?
Outside of John Legend, Dwele, Robin Thicke, Sleepy Brown, Anthony Hamilton, Musiq, & a couple others it a graveyard for the dudes. After the 90’s everything went downhill. The music now is like porno. Nothing behind just straight business. Which is cool sometimes, but not all the time.
Anybody got a link for the miseducation of Lauryn Hill.

& Yeah, some of the beats & verses off the mixtape were better, or IMO anyway…
i’m throwin in joss stone…and nikka costa. go ahead and hate…but them two white broads are the truth. and yes, i might as well throw thick and justin in there as well.
here are my top 6 (of recent albums) if anyone gives two shits:
- chrisette michelle (she’s holding me over til ebadu comes back out)
-dbrock (he’s a great talent)
- jill scott (come on…just LISTEN to her)
- justin (that’s a bad mofo)
- joss stone (i love her voice)
- omar (cause this cat is the truth..google him if you ain’t up on him)
Why does no one ever mention Trey Songz his first album was really well done
j holiday
Don’t forget Bilal! That “Love For Sale” is a banger!
why no mention of donell jones? his four cds have all been really solid RnB joints.
At the risk of sounding like Granddad Freeman…
The internet and cable gave everybody Tourettes and ADD. Nobody takes the time to create the build-up within a song, let alone an album. I guess folks figure the education system is giving the kids a handicap, the music might as well follow suit. That’s probably why I’m still listening to the soundtrack to Dead Presidents…
So Granddad-
Why not just listen to Hot Buttered Soul?
There’s that Majik Most: http://twelve-entertainment.blogspot.com/2007/11/majik-most-you-got-jokes-2007.html
There are a lot of men keeping real R&B alive.
Anthony Hamilton, Raheem Devaughn, Lyfe Jennings, Dwele, Bilal, John Legend, Musiq Soulchild.
And even on the lighter side of R&B, you have men that can really sing (Trey Songz, J Holiday, Mario) and men that are steady putting out solid R&B joints (Donell Jones).
f’real are yall SERIOUS?? Pining for the “good ol days” days of Jagged Edge & Jodeci?????!!!
Those fuckers were soooo damn corny & over the top & embarrassing compared to what R&B was before them & STILL compared to what’s came after — right now.
I’d understand reminiscing about the “Neo Soul” period because that left us with some pure blooded classics (Miseducation & Voodoo), even though it got a lil extra boho at times, perhaps indulged themselves too much to keep the appeal going, & the name sucked… But altogether I’d say that looking back & fully re-appreciating the best of that period would do your musical tastes & babymaking skills some good.
& I also understand the “ironic throwback” appeal of jamming to some over-the-top groaning Keith Sweat & Jodeci sometimes. Blurting drunkenly to “Body rocking knocking the boots yeaaaahhhh!!”
but you definitely can’t SERIOUSLY really try to reminisce & miss the days of that over-the-top, over-sung, over-sexed greasy oiled up shirt off 90’s shit. — I’d easily say that era is unequivocaly the DIRGE & lowest point in the time-line of R&B.
and besides that, I mean, it’s basically still here if you want to listen to wack ass Tank or Tyrese/Omarion/Pretty Ricky/whatever the fuck if that’s what you wanna do…
Or Ursh/Beyonce and John Legend/Alicia Keys still provide if you want that soft Wooowoowoo foreplayish shit
but Meanwhile ANTHONY HAMILTON is probably the best voice & making the best “CLASSIC” type soul in years. Better than a great deal of 70’s classic shit. & Just barely still sliding under the radar is The Dap Kings re-birthing the whole Funk Soul tradition alongside Sharon Jones, and that UK crackhead Beehive wearing Winehouse girl, Quantic Soul Orchestra, Nicole Willis, & a gang of other artists really getting it popping under the radar that might blow up full blown in the next years…
& then there’s the whole Sa-Ra/J*Davey/PPP/Bilal/Polow/Ryan Leslie futuristic space soul sound being built…
MATTER OF FACT, TRUTH BE TOLD T-Pain & R.Kelly going back & forth one-upping eachother is probably the most exciting artistic competition I’ve seen in years. Though it’s half-joke & low brow — They’re still by far the only ones that’re visibly competing, inspiring eachother & having fun actually enjoying themselves making this music. Throw The-Dream in that ring and that’s the funniest most creative Triumvirate that we’ve seen in years. Lord knows it’s not high art & doesn’t try to fit the “classic” mold, but it’s still significant, the most exuberant exciting fresh music in the Mainstream
& pardon me but ‘Bed’ does fit the “Classic” mold. Babies will still be being made off that track for years to come… I Need a extended 12 minute version for that track.
long story short:
R&B is quite thoroughly kicking Rap’s ass at the moment, doggie. Nobody in rap is having fun except the little kids. The grownups are all uninspired & just tryngta keep the checks coming. Even with Kanye/OutKast being creative it’s still not like there’s a MOVEMENT worth joining or being excited about. Just kids with “regional scenes” that rapidly get over-exposed & boiled down to just dance moves, & a bunch of bitter grownups with complicated business ventures.
ahh man Total brings back memories thanks!
Don’t forget about Eric Roberson, Robin Thicke..
Where is Jon B?!?
i had got the total tape thru bmg…i wasnt feelin them dike bitches…i agree with thumper about the greasy over the top 90s r & b…that shits embarassin…im always up for sum curtis mayfield, marvin gaye and my main man AL GREEN who i dont think i even saw mentioned once…the new stuff out now is just disposable…the whole music bussiness is fucked right now…its not just downloadin…i think its lack of quality music. Its like why buy it if u can just download it…there not gonna have but 2 good songs anyway. Even all the people who we usually look 2 2 make the classic albums have been letting the fans down…whether it be the roots, Nas, etc…o and they need 2 put R. kelly lil dic rapist ass in jail. Did nobody else get that pide piper shit. Its like he was clownin america. the pide piper in the fairy tale was a guy who came 2 a town and lead the peoples kids away with his music cuz there parents didnt pay him for getting rid of the rats….is that not sick 2 anybody else but me?? he lead away ppls kids 2 fuck em…lol…i bet he did it b4 and hes gonna do it again…
Fuck R&B, never been a fan and never will be. I’m a straight B-Boy for life. If it ain’t Al Green I ain’t trying to hear it. Play some Green with your shorty, action guaranteed!
Did anybody mention Usher yet?
I’ll drop another reply in a sec maybe. Some of the names mentioned are “honorable mentions” @ best.
Neo soul been dead. The names who made it relevant fell off ages ago. D’Angelo, L Boogie, Erykah, etc.
When is someone going to come out with a “R&B is DEAD” album?
I think R&B is in the same desert it was in during the early 80’s
- No definitive voice
- too much assembly line production.
While Anthony Hamilton is a great singer, he’s a soul singer for the most part.
There’s no Whitney, Anita Baker, Aaron Hal for the masses. Everyone is rehashing Thriller or biting D’angelo/ r Kelly to be creative.
Artist I’m checking for are
Alicia Keys
Keyshia Cole
Tank
Van Hunt
Rahsaan Patterson
Ledisi
Dwele
good look on the majik most. thanks.
Percy Miracles needs to come out with a full album and blow these suckas away.\At least his shit would be entertaining!
some guy named kev samples had a mixtape called r&b is dead
