I don’t like most “dance music.”
In my personal opinion, it’s too long, too repetitive and generally over-the-top. People that really vibe to it, I don’t really get them either. It might have to with the fact that I’m not as deep into drugs as others.
Regardless, that didn’t stop me from underground warehouse zone-tripping when I first heard “Relax, Take It Easy,” by London’s new prince of power-pop Mika.
The soft electric keys start the song off like an early 80′s rock band, ala ELO. When the diluted singing presence begins and the bass drum kicks off, the song evolves into something else completely. The vocals become almost anthem-like and the beat picks up more speed than a Ferrari F430 Spider.
Then, just when you think you’re about to dive headfirst into a hardcore dance or techno cut, the chorus of “Relax…” kicks in and you become lost in this continuous whirlwind of brilliantly structured bouncy moving music.
At less than four minutes running time, though, this track is definitely is made for the radio and not the discotheques. It’s too fine-tuned for house heads. However, in the dance haven that is the UK, this cut will be released as his sixth single from his debut album, Life in Cartoon Motion.
But, since rap is now the main form of pop music here in America, I have a feeling Dick Clark will never even hear this song.

*goes back to listening to Art Blakey’s “A Night In Tunisia”*
“People that really vibe to it, I don’t really get them either. It might have to with the fact that I’m not as deep into drugs as others.”
I’m tired, so I’m going to let this generalization slide. ;)
Dance music is Black music, and comes from the same place as our precious hip-hop. I’m from the land of house music, so I grew up with it. Shit…you’re from the D, right? That’s the mecca of North American techno…Juan Atkins and Cybotron, Derrick May, the EMF. To each their own, of course, but don’t write it off as druggie music. It’s far from it. Shit’s real son. I’ve heard some mindbending house music that has taken me to places deeper than hip-hop ever has – without the assistance of any narcotic.
If there’s anything we should be disliking, it’s that picture. I might have to add that, Terence Howard, the Bravo Channel, and Bath & Body Works Cucumber Melon lotion to my “Things that Could Turn Me Gay if I Let Them” list. lol
I haven’t even had time to listen to the Snoop interview yet, but the kids on that message board need to learn how to act. I stopped typing in all caps back in ’97. And how the fuck do you misspell “career”? Just makes me appreciate this message board that much more…
hahah this man ronnie is hilarious and dead on. i can understand why some people might associate dance music with drugs, because of that ridiculous rave culture that was everywhere in the 90s. but there’s actually a lot of really good dance music out there, and i listen to it all the time when i’m sober. can’t get down with this mika stuff though.
justice, simian mobile disco, daft punk – best dance records of 07 imo.
This fool said “things that could turn me gay if I let them” lol.
What kinda drugs does Greums take?
this shit is ALL OVER the radio here
Im still semi pissed at DP3
did a no dj version of that DP3 come out yet? and is it really that short?
you need to listen to burial. find his new album untrue.
ronnie… wow
that was some funny sh*t.
yeah, ppl already said it, but that ‘things that could turn me gay’ sh*t is hilarious.
you’re right too. I got put onto house by some chi & ny cats back in college, and I zoned the hell out to it more times than I can remember*
*- I’d probably remember more if I wasn’t sticky icky’d back then…
(but I didn’t hafta be… I think… I don’t remember)
please answer !
I thought I was in the minority when I thought that DP3 was not overwhelming.
Not really into dance music either, I still feel that the “DJ’s” are just wasting valuable equipment playing repetitive beats at ultra-high rpm’s. That Daft Punk stuff is cool though, I remember they did a song with Slum Village that was dope.

Now back to the hiphop!!!
DP3 is pretty weak.
You guys are diluted if you think Jay is gonna release some mindblowing shit at this point.

videO
gOOd muzak.
People can’t expect Jay-z to keep knocking out the lyrics he used to, ’96 is looooooong gone and so is “Reasonable Doubt”. With all the business moves that he has been making lately I don’t think he is spittin’ for the dough anymore, I think he honestly just can’t put the mic down & loves the game too much for real. “Dead Presidents III” is aiigghhtt, I’ll just take it for what it is.
Haha…I like to keep it light. And if it comes at my expense, even better.
this gruems character is………….. something
@ Enzo, you aint seen shit yet.
i can’t believe this. i’m embarrassed to see this endorsed on this site. this is all i heard anywhere i went in amsterdam this summer. europeans would have the worst taste in music in the world if it wasn’t for the asians.
smh.
really? i mean… really? ill be the first to say, that im a huge fan of trance/house/dnb/acid house/all that shit.
but this right here is terrible.
there is absolutely nothing good about it. its the same uninspired, formulaic shit that i see being put out in every genre.
and personally … i give a fuck about what theyre jammin in the UK. anything labeled “uk” and “dance” is going to be deemed bad before i even listen.
its funny how nowadays…. the comments contain a lot more substance than the OG post.
The post is a means of facilitating the comments. If i put a completely personal perspective on the song, it wouldn’t do it justice.
Fo those that don’t like it, that’s cool. To each his(her) own.
As far as me not vibing to “dance” music, it’s just not my forte. I get bored with it.
However, that doesn’t mean i can’t appreciate it for what it is, and understand why others like it, which is something that can’t be said for everyone….
And the pic, you should see dude’s others…as far as i know, he’s full-blown. “Not that there’s anything wrong with that…” Seinfeld
smokingsection should post more grime/dubstep. some of the artists from london (burial, skream, high rankin, wiley, skepta) are doing a lot. the new burial album (untrue) is incredible.
grew up listening to everything from brotha lynch hung to Almighty RSO (i know right). then in my early twenties i moved to europe. orginally thought dance, trance, house and techno was shit. but when it becomes part of your culture, you give it a chance, its damn good. you can add pills if you want. i never really got into that but every now and then ill knock a few back and hit up a tiesto concert. shit is crazy.
i can’t believe this. i’m embarrassed to see this endorsed on this site.

Enh…
u guys forget where hip hop started, bambata sampling european electronica pioneers kraftwerk. hip hop used to be great BECAUSE it mish mashed other styles, then the rappers egos got too big and the music took a backseat. only timbaland is brave enough to try something new now.
If not for DJ Shadow & RJD2 being among my favorites I wouldn’t have the tollerance for electronica that I do.
And this track… heh, well ish isn’t bad at all.
