Two rap groups utilized Lou Reed’s “Walk on The Wild Side” during the early 1990′s. The first group, Marky Mark and The Funky Bunch, sampled Reed on their album Music For The People for the track “Wildside.” The second group, A Tribe Called Quest, did so with “Can I Kick It” off of their debut album Peoples Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm.
“Can I Kick It” took Reed’s timeless sample, added some serious scratching, a crowd pleasing call and response hook, and highly quotable verses from both Tip and Phife. The end result was a single of epic proportions. To this day, the song can still rock crowds of all ages & ethnicities and it still remains one of Tribe’s most identifiable singles from their vast catalog.
Almost two decades after the release of “Can I Kick It,” Marky Mark is acting and The Funky Bunch is nowhere to be found. Tribe, for all intents & purposes, isn’t together either…but there are definitely more people pulling for them to reunite than The Funky Bunch.
