When you think of classic hip hop you immediately think of what? Dookie chain. Big ass boom box. Kangol. LL Cool J.
He’s the self-proclaimed G.O.A.T. I’m not arguing with that. With Mama Said Knock You Out on his resume, LL held the crown justly. The album had mass appeal, and the singles even got MTV airplay before black and brown faces were dominant on the channel. The layout of the album was key too. He mixed it up so you get a dose of hard and soft all the way through.
The title track was a dream hit for anyone: hard sound, Marley Marl beat, lyrics rhyme, radio and club play. But some of the other gems I found on the CD when I was young’n were “Milky Cereal” and “Around The Way Girl”. The lyrics were simple for memorization and I related with the dreams of many fly girlies at my disposal. My favorite line was, “When we began her hairstyle was neat/ But when I left the next mornin’, it looked like shredded wheat.”
Now that I’m grown with a more keen sense in music, there are few more cuts that I feel now. Mainly is “To Da Break Of Dawn”. This is probably why you don’t wanna mess with LL. He murdered MC Hammer and Ice T on this track (and a third I wasn’t able to identify. maybe Kool Moe Dee). His lyrics exploit the victims’ weaknesses to the max; said they “wouldn’t bust a grape in a fruit fight.” Probably one of the best diss records ever. Also, “Farmers Blvd. (Our Anthem)” has replay potential. Nothing extremely special. Just the song you always need: a dope beat and 5-10 of the best spitters from your crew. One guy on track serves LL, but I couldn’t make out the voice. LL must’ve wanted to keep him hidden. A couple of other I think are still note-worthy are “Illegal Search” and “Jingling Baby” Remix.
Though LL didn’t have Rick Ruben to give the original magic touch, and pretty much every track has a noticeable James Brown sample, front to back, this LL’s finest work. Take a listen and learn from a legend. Enjoy.

What is Scarface’s new album going to be called?
I need to get a hold of him if it’s not set in stone and tell him he needs to change it to, “The Fountain.”
(As in youth)
How can someone be in the game as long as he has… and their flow still be on point and not sound dated at all?
I’m floored man.
I’m trying to think… who else has a flow (and lyrics) that still has you listening like that?
Rakim
Kool G. Rap
Face has a secret.
I labbed this classic up on a recent road trip dolo in a bucket with only a tape player. I already knew what it had but hearing it again made me appreciate ll and harken back to a day when an album gave varity and balance. I kinda want to see ll rip jiggas dome piece off then retire on true goat status. not only ll deserve his due but the adjulation of the hiphop community. if you’re thinkin of a hiphop mt. rushmore then ll would be the mountain it would be chisled out of. he had either created or filled most every lane in the game. the brash youngster(lil wayne). the murderous battle rapper(game), the bejeweled hard head(insert rapper of choice here), the consious mc(y’ll forget def jam in the motherland, ghostpenning lytes verse on self destruction), the multimedia mogle and you know who the ladies love. he’s deaded careers(damn, canibus) and was still gangsta enuff to 2 step in his videos. I went to the freshfest where elove hit the eject button and ll jumped out of the tape deck. ll is hiphops carlos santanca, often regarded but never recoginized as the greatest.
yo any one got the soul in the hole ost???
Good post, and btw, that 3rd victim WAS Kool Moe Dee…
‘Eat ‘em Up L, Chill’ was another banger as well…
L was a beast before he ran outta chap-stick…
How is it L never made a deal w/ Chap-Stick???
L’s team dropped the ball on that one.
You fools got me laughin w/those comments lol.
Chuck said a tape deck…in a car! lol
Really though, I was bitter towards L for murkin Moe Dee. I didn’t forgive him until Mama…, which was straight undeniable. He was versatile & always rhyming like it was his last chance to spit on a mic.

Remember where you heard it first…….
Yo Gotty, my dad has a tape deck in his 2000 Expedition. Don’t hate. The tape adapter gets the best reception for the iPod.
When my Ac got stolen, I needed a new whip ASAP, so I bought a 94 Altima cash…It was straight hooptie status, 5 speed with a tape deck. I went diggin for records and there at the record spot I copped Blowout Comb and Low End Theory on tape for a dolla each and was happier than a muhfcka bangin’ them tapes to and from work..
LL was always ahead of his time. He was stuntin’ back in the days of Walking With a Panther….Champagned out on the cover..He has always been it my top 10. I just hope he bows out gracefully without getting clowned.
Big Fonz-
Actually my DLO adapter has the tape deck beat. I have still have a tape deck in my 99′ Altima (and CD Player) so I’ve been through em’ all.
LL…..man….i got several of his albums and I’m not one to knock artists for switching up their style and LL could have been a good fit with G-Unit…..that is before DEFinition and Todd Smith. I mean he was…hold on fuck it imma throw Ten in there too! Damn where was I, he was preaching that cuss-less rap shit pretty heavy and after those albums stink up his legacy now he wants to make a drastic change to the street side? I can not buy into that. I’m sorry. Where was Farmers and the battle side when he was passing out ice cream cones with Mary? That’s been his biggest obstacle his entire career: balance on his albums. He could make a classic DOUBLE album of a greatest hits but his solos…eehhhh. This album right here is one of his better ones @ achieving the perfect harmony and but I feel Mr. Smith probaby edges it out slightly as far as credibility for his shit to be believable. This is one of the greatest “comeback” albums too. Ya think he got another one in him?
Anyone got that ‘beyond reasonable doubt’ album?
New Brad Jordan track is goin’! Whoever laced it flipped the L.Williams sample.
Man I have this feeling that if Fat Joe just took some time away from radio jams and camios he could make some serious music. I think hes got the ability to throw together some serious shit he just doesn’t do it.
Maybe I’ve just only been exposed to his radio jams and shit. Anyone got any real Fat Joe stuff I need to hear?
Yo, M.Z. is Great
