Words By Corey Bloom
Over the last seven months, Red Bull has been sliding through cities coast to coast looking for the next big producer with their first annual Big Tune competition. From San Francisco and Los Angeles, to Houston and then up to Chicago, back to Seattle, and finally New York, twelve individuals squared off battling through the brackets. The top two from each city advanced on, all converging to now, The Big Tune finale taking place Nov. 1st in Seattle.
While the idea of a “beat battle” reads pretty dry on screen, the idea behind Big Tune runs a lot deeper. Inspired by the infamous Jamaican Reggae and Dancehall Sound Clash competitions, Big Tune is set up by pitting two producers against one another with nothing but an arsenal of their original productions, with the crowd responsible for determining who moves on and who goes home. Equipped with two CDJ’s, each producer is given two shots, playing each track for around 60 seconds aiming to convince the crowd. A pattern in each cities battle seemed to be the more pumped the producer was (i.e., getting out from behind the comfort of the CDJ and bringing it to their competitor), the longer they lasted. Of course there were a few who got by their own interpretive hand gestures, but the ones who put the same energy out that they put into the music tended to fair well. You can check for yourself at www.redbullbigtune.com, and get up to speed as each of the six cities battles are posted.
Of the twelve remaining producers, a few names might stand out. Representing New York is Marco Polo and Los Angeles resident Babu took his city’s title. But for the most part Big Tune is out to display the lesser known talent. Judging from things, it will be tough to take out the hometown dudes Sabzi and Brainstrom (Rich Boy got a younger brother?). While they have a slight advantage, the energy brought fourth by Chicago’s Tall Black Guy and Rio will be hard to match. I’m biased because as a Bay Area dude at heart I gotta go with Cambo, who’s a little hyphy, but he’s got some heat. If you’re in the area, look out for the kid. I’ll be posted up somewhere with a drink and a camera. And check back here because we’ll have updates on the event.

Yessir The ARE is that dude out the ‘H’..
^ Is that joint any good because with the first two videos he has out, sounds like dude is only good for dance moves this time around. He better pick up the pieces before they re-po that Lambo (with the spider seats). LMAO
Not the real retail rip for Chris Brown. Less than CD quality sound and the tracks end kinda abruptly, but you get to listen to the whole joint & decide for yourself if it’s worth a purchase (or at least decide which tracks you want to DL when the real thing eventually leaks).
Thanks Lay Low I’ve been looking for that Chris Brown for a while even though I don’t expect too much from it from judging from the tracks that leaked. Do you know if this is the offical retail version?

damn Gotty, I was taking a ‘life break’, and catching up on the previous post. ‘Gruemsed up’ really caught on…

… and when’s the Little Brother contest over?
…and speaking of beat battles…
anybody holdin’ that Pete Rock vs. DJ Premier mixtape hosted by 9th Wonder?
What up, ya’ll. I’m a frequent visitor to the site.
I was in the Houston battle. Everyone was really cool in the Redbull camp hosting the event, including but not limited to vitamin d, and jake one. They are really good people.
Are is has been my homie for over a decade, and hopefully he’ll bring the title to the H.
I also want to let people know about Desiac, Joe Trax, Draetoven, and of course myself…lol…
I look forward to competing again next year. Forget about wings, Red Bull gave me recognition.

I just got Fruity Loops 7& a bunch of drum kits, but I haven’t the slightest idea of how to really construct a beat. Somebody, help a dude get his 9th Wonder on…
One.Eye – Man I was looking for your email addy last nite so I could tell you thanks for the fuckin laugh lol
Anyone got that DJ Muggs- Soul Assassins Vol. 1 mixtape?
sheeeit Gotty…
it’s gravy, baby. I probably check TSS more than my Yahoo account anyway…lol
anyone got that away team – training day? can’t find it anywhere on the net..
Yo AmpGeez, my advice is to just keep fucking around with the program until you get the hang of if. If you search around on the net you could probably find some video tutorials or something, I use Ableton Live 6 and it has a built-in tutorial and I’m sure Fruity Loops has one as well. Yo Gotty where do I send my “Get Back” contest pic?
Yo D.Howser..I feel ya bruh..
that’s enterainment..ain’t no way
he doing all that dancin’ and keepin’
the breath control right..case in point..
MTV VMA’s..
Man Chris Brown is so frustrating. I used to bump his album religiously, I mean your man ain’t me, say goodbye, and some other classics. Usually you expect one or two tracks to be “radio play” and the rest of the CD to be the real magic, but I feel like this fools turned to the darkside and his entire CD will play like a fergie album
Fergie>Chris Brown (a lot of people slept on The Dutchess)
Chris Brown….classics!?!?!? How old are U? 12?
damn, already more comments than my will.i.am story. haha. didn’t mean to sleep on houston, i know they’re gonna bring it. hopefully gonna be linking up with just blaze and de la at the event so if there is any questions ya’ll want asked just let me know.
You’d really rather listen to Fergie’s CD than Chris Browns? I mean I can see you hating them both, but where do you like her better? And no I’m not 12 or 13, nore do I see what that has to do with anything?
clas·sic
1. of the first or highest quality, class, or rank: a classic piece of work.
Does my using “classic” to describe some songs I liked 2 years ago still confuse you?
Oh yeah TC I just woke up so I’m a little grumpy, don’t make me get all greumsy man. I loved Chris Browns first CD minus run it. And everything he’s done lately seems bland and radio made to me. Whereas Fergie’s entire solo career seems bland and radio made to me. And whether either of them even write there own lyrics, at least Chris Brown has a helluva voice
As far as im concerned, Marco Polo is reppin’ for the T.dot..
