Words By Jada G.
If sex could be summed up in a four-minute melody and seductive come-on, it would singlehandedly take the form of “Bed,” the R&B jam of the summer. The inescapably hypnotic track has put newcomer J. Holiday among the next generation of baby-making crooners. From the album title, Back Of My ‘Lac, one might anticipate fourteen tracks of backseat loving, and it seems like J. Holiday loves his block as much as his lady. But he fails to strike a believable balance.
On the title track, J. Holiday attempts to fuse Smokey Robinson’s “Cruisin” with “Diamond in the back, muthaf*ckas,” but the result is awkward and disjointed. He then proceeds to offer the “Thug Commandments” and smoke up with his lady on “Laa Laa,” but with one puff and pass, the romance is gone.
‘Lac picks up speed again with the Darkchild-produced “Be With Me,” as he offers to be a knight in shining armor to show a lady what she’s truly worth. On “Thank You,” he expresses his appreciation for his woman in a mix of sex and repetition that translates into a slow groove, and shows potential on the blues-tinged “Fallin,” accompanied by guitar over a simple drum beat.
Marvin Gaye urged his angel to come live with him. Stevie Wonder painted ribbons in the sky for his love. And while the magical era of these men and artists such as Donny Hathaway has passed, we still long for the tender flow of rhythm and blues. R. Kelly didn’t see nothing wrong with a little bump and grind, and Jodeci vowed to love you for life. J. Holiday has enough promise to potentially join the legends, once he replaces the “puff, puff, pass” for three new L’s – love, lust, and ladies.

Once again…I’m showing my age, but all this thug-N-B music is just not for me. I’m sorry, you can’t be a man with sensitivity in one song and be huggin the block on another. And for the most part I can’t stand cursing in R&B songs. I haven’t heard much from this dude, but I heard one joint and it was en-word this and muthereff that…on an R&B track. Now my ears are faaaaaaaaaar from being virgin. I can listen to the thuggedest, grimiest rap joint and not blink twice, but when I listen to R&B I want some smooth shit, well written and with some feeling, not somebody who seems like he’s trying to bank on the popularity of the whole thug image.
very well put, Jada G. And i’m also co-signing with the above statement.

Good read, Jada G.
passwrd? =]
damn right jada g
i agree with the thug-n-b statement, but sometimes it’s nice background music. and u can’t really deny that ‘bed’ is a banger. the bigger question however is why is the dude on the mixtape is screaming at me like i stole something from his store? damn!
what’s good with the password???
