La The Darkman & Willie The Kid

I’m biased on this one because I spent some time with La while in college. La was “that New York dude” on campus. Arrogant. Walking with a bop so hard that you would’ve thought one of his legs was longer than the other. Timbs in the fuckin heat. Jordans & 1′s. Selling the skimpiest dime bags ever, but with that uncanny NYC slick talk to have you thinking it was going to be the best shit you ever smoked.

He’s definitely one of the funniest cats I’ve ever met & when he started rapping, buzzing about how he was working with Wu, we all responded with “Yeah…okay.” All we expected out of La was punchlines. That was until he started playing songs off Heist Of The Century. To this day, I’m still a believer that it was one of the most unheralded albums of the late 90′s, complete with some of the best production by Carlos “Six July” Broady and RZA’s various understudies. Play “Gun Rule,” “Lucci” or “Shine” and I’m there.

So when I see a new track or mixtape by him, I’m obligated to listen. He & his younger brother, Willie The Kid, teamed up for two tracks on the latest Gangsta Grillz. “Hand On My Glock,” with its fast-paced, hard drum pattern, shows that he still has that fast-paced, enunciated NYC pattern to his spit that I heard way back on “I Want It All.”

I wonder if he’s still got trees.
