New Hell Rell Video for “I Ain’t Playin’ With ‘Em”/” You Know What It Is.”
“The Raekwon album came in done. It’s finished! It’s a finished record. Dre did two records, we were doing the deal, and during the deal the Christmas break came. We took a break for two weeks – came back – Dre acted like we never spoke! I was like ‘Alright, this Raekwon thing…’ and he’s like “Nah, I ain’t fuckin’ with that no more”. And that was it! – Anonymous source regarding the Raekwon/Dr. Dre/Aftermath/OBCL2 (Source – Unkut.com).
Two Record Labels I Would Not Sign To As An Artist In The Year 2007…
* Aftermath – Someone please pass the memo to 50 that Koch isn’t an artist graveyard. It’s Aftermath.
* Bad Boy – Not unless I had a prepackaged plan that included a ringtone-ready song, a hot dancestep & my own Vaseline. From the outside looking in, it seems Puff is concerned with preserving two things – Puff & Puff’s pockets.
Of course, I’m not going to bash Dre based off the recants of an anonymous source. I’d love to hear Dre’s side of the story, but we all know he’s the prototype for the nonspeaking producer. Chances of hearing his take are slim to none.
The biggest rock you could pitch at Dre, thus deeming what anonymous’ statements as credible, is to look @ his track record for neglecting/shelving artists – Truth Hurts. Rakim. Petey Pablo…well, he did come out with an album. But he suffers from the obvious – his buzz has long been gone.
Rae’s in that same position. Lyrics & wit aside, how many people outside of diehard enthusiasts are still waiting on OBCL2? It’s been twelve long years since the original OBCL. Do we still even need a Part 2? The Mafioso rap formula used on that album has long been Xeroxed, downtrodden to death, revived and died again. Could Rae really expect to breathe new breath into it?
For the life of me, I can’t understand why Rae signed with Aftermath anyways. Typically, only those who’ve managed to do crazy numbers & radio-friendlier tracks get the promotional power of Aftermath/Interscope behind their work. In the current landscape, Rae’s crossover appeal is minimal so there lies part of the problem that makes him less than priority for the label.
I’m just praying somehow Joell Ortiz & Bishop Lamont cause enough of a sustained splash for Aftermath to give them a proper push when the time comes.
Then again, I’m the one who still has hope that Kwame Brown will finally reach his full potential.

Hov’s verse is much better than everything 50 said on his whole album
Who would sign to Bad Boy ever? A dead man has been putting out more albums on Bad Boy than Black Rob and G.Dep did. When your boss wants more shine than you, it ain’t a good look (cue the Suge Knight Source Awards footage).
according to raekwon, he technically never signed with aftermath, which i hope is true. i agree with you in hopes that bishop lamont and joell will not suffer like all those other artists. they’re way too talented to let go to waste.
haha that kwame brown line wrapped it all up!!
yeah idk if i am REALLY waiting for that new Rae, i need more energy from him.
Gotty…
With Aftermath, I feel like the biggest thing Dre can do for an artist is put him on a Dre album, ala Chronic, 2001, Detox. And if you don’t fit into that mold, you’re simply not going to get that push. Can you imagine Rae on Detox, or even Joell Ortiz? With their ethos already established, it’d be too hard to mold them into somerthing they’re not.
As far as Petey Pablo goes…I’m pretty sure you’re referring to him being on Tha Row, with Suge. I don’t ever recall him being on ‘Math.
Oh, and Kwame? Don’t hold your breath….
anyone holding that Bishop Lamont tape that everyone has been buzzing over? I’d really like to listen to it but I haven’t found it anywhere. Thanks.
The Forbes Remix was hot, they shoulda thrown Kanye on it though
Fuck record labels period! Why is it that in 2007 artists are still relying on others to put them on? I understand that labels can give you that added “push”, but fuck it man we live in a technologically advanced world where YOU can do virtually anything in regards to music. It’s time for more independents to rise up and artists to build their own companies so that they can do for themselves, instead of being stagnated by others who have already established themselves.
i personally could give a shit less about this forbes remix. a couple of idiots with very little skill rapping about how rich they are and then jay-z. if kanye isnt on it, why should i care? hov’s verse is great (way better than fif or piff), but the thing that wouldve made this remix newsworthy was if kanye was on it.
Kwame Brown… you wrong for that… ha!
That’s how much respect for Mike J the hood got… we kinda just let that one slide, right?
Anyway Puff = Big Red from The 5 Heartbeats
“My office hours are from 9 to 5…”
Industry Gangster
Dre? That’s my dude, but it seems like he allows mention of these collabos (Rae, Rakim, whoever else) hit the street to further HIS name, and keep that buzz alive, cuz he hardly ever (NEVER) acts on ‘em…
I hope he doesn’t kill Joell Ortiz’ career…
why would Kanye be on the remix?
he’s not even close 2 the same tax bracket as 50, Puff, or Jay….
ps- Jay KILLS it.

Yeah i need that mick boogie mixtape
^ Ya’ll beat me to the punch… a re-up would be excellent.
@FLEA
“Why is it that in 2007 artists are still relying on others to put them on?”
Because of the way the industry is structured.
You can make a “Graduation” – we are talking the exact same album – and without a label behind you, no one is going to ever really know it’s out there.
And you certainly aren’t going to sell millions of records. You may push a million downloads, but word of mouth happens through exposure as well.
Radio, video, labels, and media are all in bed together. It costs money to be seen and heard.
Your way can work – if you don’t mind not selling any records and not making any money from all of your creativity.
I compare it all to the whole premise behind the storyline of Alias (the television series). SD-6 looked easy to take down. But once Sydney Bristow went to the CIA – she found that it was a lot of work – almost too much work.
The music industry is easy to fix from the outside looking in. But once you’re inside… once you’re inside… you either go along with things, or you don’t.
And I honestly don’t see anyone bringing down the way labels are structured for a very long time for one reason.
Money.
^ So true.
Diddy killed the forbes remix (not saying much), jay was cool but his flow coulda been tighter. As for 50, when you get outrapped by Diddy, there’s not much anyone can say.
@ Beware
As for Rae, why couldn’t you see him on detox? I’m sure he could pen a rhyme about smoking weed, drinking, or fucking. Almost any rapper could. Signing to the math wasn’t his best move, but with busta supposedly ex. producing it. it did make some sense at the time.
@ MZ
I just don’t see Eastcoast rappers fitting in on Westcoast beats, alongside Westcoast rappers.
I guess on a track like “Lyrical Gangbang” or a posse cut like “Some LA Agginz,” but not on any of the singles. And the buzz from those singles are what would help raise the mainstream status of guys like Rae and Ortiz, and eventually get their albums out.
For Dre to put out your album, a lot people have to know your work and want your album. Not just the hip-hops heads, but more importantly the crossover fans. It sucks, because they won’t know of these artists unless Dre laces them, but that’s not his problem.
Dre gets paid to put his fingers on anything, so why would he waste his time with something he thinks people don’t want to buy?
As far as Diddy’s verse on that remix…he did kill it. I was actually impressed how he fliped some of Biggie’s lines from the “Only You Remix”, where he flipped Milk D’s rhymes. Better than I expected.
Thank his ghostwriter.
;)
I feel the points you make Anonymous, but if everybody takes that approach & outlook towards the music industry then change will never come. Some people need to at least try and move against the grain ya dig?
I’m just letting you know… from the inside… from someone who would love for that change that you speak of to happen…
It is too difficult.
The minute the labels see true talent in an artist… they offer them a deal. And most likely, an artist does not turn down a million dollar deal. Gone are the days when you could put out your own records and sell 100k-400k units (i.e. Master P, Cash Money, E-40, etc) to become a millionaire. But even in those instances where the artists were already millionaires – they all signed to labels.
Money rules the world. Baby and them, P, E-40 – they were all millionaires. But when Universal comes along and gives you 30 million, 70% of the split, and allows you to keep and own your masters – you’re going to sign.
Labels have the money it takes to make things happen. It’s hard for artists to take money out of their own pocket to shoot videos, get radio play, and promote themselves – which are necessities.
And that’s really what it all comes down to.
Oh yeah? Look at Cormega, he’s doing it BIG on his own.
To a very high degree, money makes everything happen. Sure there are great artists out there w/supreme talent, but if you aren’t willing to play by certain rules, you’re not going to get in the game.
Well I guess you guys are right to an extent, but you have to admit there are plenty of artists doing their thing on their own who are well known. Look at MF Doom, he’s built a huge following, plus you have labels like Stones Throw records who I’m sure get money and have a dedicated fan base. Bottom line, if want the big cake, bentley coupe, big house and mad honeys go major. If you want longevity, dedicated fans, and slow but steady paper (plus keep more of it!) go independent. KOCH ain’t a graveyard!
Koch is not a graveyard. No independent labels/distributors are if you have a.) a good fanbase who will buy your stuff and b) are willing to put out good mat’l.
I’ve been listening to a few artists who went from major to indie and didn’t sell. After listening, my theory is they slacked off when they went to the indie labels. The quality of the albums has to be there to justify folks supporting you if you make that transition.
Real talk Gotty, that’s the response I was looking for.
