Words by DJ Sorce-1

The first 12″ I bought was Big L’s “Ebonics”. It was mid ’99, I was a freshmen in high school, and I was saving every cent I made so I could buy two turntables and a mixer. To force myself to follow through, I started buying records before I had enough for tables. I’ll never forget how great it felt to buy my first record. I just sat there and looked at it forever. I still play “Ebonics” on a regular basis and it still sounds great. It always takes me back to my early days as a DJ. My mixing was terrible, I didn’t know what the hell I was doing, but it was so much fun.

Ironically, L was murdered not long after I had purchased my tables. For obvious reasons, he has always been an important musical figure in my life. I never forget how much it hurt to hear about his death, and how tragic it seemed. With a few major labor deals on the table, the stars all seemed to be aligned for him to make a huge comeback and take the new millennium by storm.

But fate had a different plan.

Yesterday marked the birthday of Big L, one of the truly great MC’s of all time. L was a one of a kind talent. His voice, delivery, flow, lyricism, and ability to freestyle were incredible.

What better way to celebrate his life then to share some of his music? Here are a few of my favorite Big L tracks for you to enjoy.

“Thick” with DITC

L steals the show on this one. When he starts his verse with “I be puffing blunts in the house, sexing stunts on the couch,” over Premier’s mixture of Asian sounding bells and thumping drums, it’s a wrap.

“The Big Picture Intro”

Listen for the intro scratches by Premier. This is perhaps Premier’s best scratching ever, which is saying a lot. The songs haunting production combined with ill cutting helped immortalize one of L’s most famous verses.

“Bang Bang”- With Young Buck, Big Pun & Big L (DJ Rondevu Blend from Knights of the Round Table 3)

DJ Rondevu gives you three the hard way on this one by combining Young Buck, Pun, and L for an unforgettable blend experience. All three MC’s work perfectly over the Nancy Sinatra sampled vocals and twanging guitar beat.
