“When I Open Up My Mouth…”
ARTIST WEEKS By Gotty™ on April 3, 2007 at 7:36 am
My last review’s comment board was a bit shocking to me. As an opinion writer, I realize (and I would hope) that I don’t necessarily always take the most conventional stances on issues, but I do hope that what I write has merit and makes readers consider my opinion, even if they don’t agree with it wholeheartedly.
What surprised me is the amount of comments that discredited Lil’ Wayne without supplying evidence as back up (let’s not even get into how my youthful fashion sense of L.A. Gear sandals was insulted). I myself understand completely the appeal behind hating on Wayne, he’s so easy to not give a chance. My friend Bryan (mentioned in the review), could tell you how difficult it was for me to even give him a listen, I threw out a lot of the same labels that a lot of Wayne haters still use (“kid gimmick rapper,” “brainless southerner,” “hot flow, no lyrics” etc.) But ever a faithful fan of Outkast, I bought Idlewild, excited to see what was in store. Track 12: “Hollywood Divorce” was what absolutely sold me. Lil Wayne unquestionably has the best flow on the song, and quite possibly (no disrespect to Dre on “Mighty O,” or Big on “The Train”) on the whole album.
Maybe it was the hurricane hitting his hometown, but Weezy really stepped his game up and became one of the loudest voices for the victims of Katrina in the wake of the tragedy. Yes, Jay-z’s “Minority Report” gets its props, but it came later than FEMA, and with all respect due, Jay was probably sipping champagne on a plush yacht, an ocean away when Katrina struck. And, sure, Weezy may have it made too, but it’s still his hometown that was devastated by the hurricane.
Some say The Carter II was Weezy’s coming out party as a legitimate lyricist, and that definitely has a case with tracks like “Receipt,” and the incomparable “Shooter.” But Dedication 2 is where Weezy shows just how talented he is as a rapper with ridiculous, unbeatable flows on tracks like “Sportscenter,” “Spitter,” and the terrifically clever (and once again heartfelt), “Georgia… Bush.”
The fact is, Weezy’s been rapping for more than a decade, there’s no way he can not have picked up skills and tips from the veterans having been in the game that long. The man also clearly has a passion for rapping, as there are endless freestyles, guest spots and mixtapes bearing his name, and being the president of his label, he has no obligation to grind that hard. As you can see by the links, the amount of material dude puts out demands respect alone (and if its done by ghostwriters I’m surprised they haven’t sued yet for being overworked, or come out successfully solo yet… how’s Gillie’s career going again?).
For those that say Lil Wayne is not as lyrically sound as Jay (I liked Weezy’s “Show Me What you Got” better for the record), as fundamentally talented with the flow as Eminem, and not as talented at talking about cash as the Clipse, I understand where you’re coming from. There aren’t many that have the respect for the veterans that I do. But really, if you only listen to the best of the best in each Hip-Hop category, you may want to think of other things to put on the empty half of your record shelf.
It’s time to give Lil’ Wayne the credit he deserves. No, he may not be the best rapper alive, but he gives his heart to his craft and puts in immense effort to come up with different, interesting flows for the listener, and that’s something that’s just foolish to ignore. His fresh, new flows and huge punchlines have an appeal all their own and they’re something that should be appreciated and embraced by fans, not rejected. But hey, why listen to me? Weezy said it best on “Shooter”:
“I’m tired of being patient/Stop being rapper racist, region haters, spectators, dictators/behind door dick takers, its outrageous!/You don’t know how sick you make us/I want to throw up like chips in Vegas/But this is Southern face it, if we too simple, then y’all won’t get the basics…”
All bullets indeed.
=====================================================
Following up with something similar to the Nas Shots, we decided to do some Wayne Shots. This was damn near impossible considering how the man has been a straight workhorse with a gang of material. But what follows below is a mass amount of Lil Wayne’s material – ranging from b-sides, remixes, instrumentals, mixtapes, and various guest appearances – all in high quality. If you see a particular something missing, feel free to email in a link or post it in the comments section.
If you grab even one thing from the list below, drop a comment please.
Enjoy!

Wow.
That 50 ain’t half bad.
(It’s actually kind of dope)
But can anyone tell me where that ‘Ha ha ha’ hook is originally from? I can hear a females voice in my head… it’s old school… I just can’t recall it.
Wow, this is major. Props to TSS crew and all you provide. Though D’Wayne Carter is not the greatest or the best, he is very entertaining and makes Hip Hop still enjoyable. One thing critics and Hip Hop aficionados forget mention is Wayne’s passion for rapping. It’s his craft and he gets better everyday at it. Peace and Love.
Fuck Sleezy Weezy and all ya\’ll homo\’s on his dick
LMAO You\’re totally gay
Weezy is an incredible rapper, when I want to hear top-notch rapping, Weezy is definetly on the menu. When I want to hear music? he’s a little further down the list.
” Weezy may have it made too, but it’s still his hometown that was devastated by the hurricane.”
So that makes “Georgia… Bush” a better song that “Minority Report”? Seriously?
(And both songs were pretty later than FEMA, fyi.)
“The man also clearly has a passion for rapping, as there are endless freestyles, guest spots and mixtapes bearing his name, and being the president of his label, he has no obligation to grind that hard.”
There’s no one else of note on the label, so, actually, he does have to grind that hard. Otherwise, it’s like, just Baby — which would make him the president of his boss who’s also his fake father that ke kisses on the mouth.
“But really, if you only listen to the best of the best in each Hip-Hop category, you may want to think of other things to put on the empty half of your record shelf.”
Never said one should only listen to top shelf rap. Just pointing out chink’s in your argument’s armor, homey.
Wayne will never be close to being the best rapper alive to me (lack of overall substance and direction, plus his voice annoys me to pieces), but you’re raising one of the better defenses in his favor I’ve seen.
And I’m not even going to get into yesterday’s ascertation that he’s making grand, over-arching alluisons and nods to theme and motif. We can read into, and thrust upon, all the layers of meaning we want onto our favorite rappers, but, sooner or later, we discover that they’re pretty much idiot savants who are gettings things right by mistake. ( Remember when everyone was trying to paint some grand scheme onto Cam’ron’s nonsensical pitter patter? Where are those voices now?)
WELL I STILL THINK HES TRASH
DISC 2 DA DROUGHT 3 WHO GOT IT
HEY SMOKING SECTION WE LOVE YOU GUYS
THANKS FOR THE WEEZY
^ scroll dude, it’s there.
wow guys i don’t even know what to say except mad fucking props…this shit is ridiculous
TSS is something serious
nevermind i dont think its out yet, but for the haters i jus wanna know what other rapper FLOODS the market with material other than Weezy. and lets not forget the fact hes only about 24 been in the game since hes was 16 with platinum records under his belt.
as much as i appreciate the articles and the links. yall put way too much lil wayne on this site.
I liked Waynes flow since he came out and I love that hes always switched it up and changed his delivery. But I agree his voice is not for everyone. If you hate it u hate it. A million articles can’t change someones personal taste. Waynes one of the few rappers I love that I don’t try to convince anyone else to like. You do or u don’t. If u don’t IMO ur missing out but then you’ll never know what ur missing anyway so who cares.
I’m not and never been a big Eminem fan for the same reason. His voice drives me. I can listen to a song here and there but no more.
^ Enh…I disagree. This is maybe the third, max fifth time we’ve actually given Weezy hard pub on here. Actually, I put the thought out there & the crew followed up on it, b/c we DON’T give him much play around these parts.
I think I’ll speak on it more later, but for now, for those who like Weezy, enjoy Weezy freely.
One contention: Black Ice’s “The Ugly Show” is the best Katrina song i’ve heard, bar none.
The acapella on Def Poetry:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9TdugMcgZIc
The song from his myspace:
http://www.myspace.com/blackicemusic
I’m with dude who doesn’t try to convince people how nice Weezy is…I used to hate on him HARD…you couldn’t TELL me dude could spit for real, let alone was one of the nicest…anytime someone tried to explain, I shut em down.
Then I got tired of hearing everyone talking about The Carter, the “Walk In” intro, Go DJ, etc…and not having any clue why they liked it so much, so I checked it out.
Now, Go DJ and BM Jr. are two of the songs I spin out the most, he’s in my top 20 favorites of all time, and most definitely my top 5 best out right now…
Check him out at your own pace. You’ll be glad you did. Unless you really can’t take his voice.
I hope all these links go down by noon….
Weezy ain’t my style but after these couple articles, ima have to get Da Drought 3 just to check out.
Damn. I was hoping the Game/50 beef was over, but I think that Yayo incident sparked Game up again. He get’s real personal on this one. I don’t know how he’s gonna punch Ras Kass for talking bout his kid, but then talk about kidnapping 50’s kid. WOW.
im gonna spare everybody a long as essay that i dropped in the comments last time but i will say this. LIL WAYNE SAID HIMSELF THAT HE DOES NOT CARE ABOUT RAPPING OR HIP HOP. he has said that himself in interviews, so im sorry dude but he doesn’t have that passion for rappin that u say he does.
Lovin’ Weezy until he drops that fake jamaican accent, has he ever met a Jamaican?
@Anthony – you’re reading the wrong interviews then, man. Check the latest XXL.
and I think his Jamaican thing is just to experiment with a really rythmic flow. But yea, I thought it was kind of corny the first few times I heard it, but he’s getting good at it now.
I am a true Weezy believer, but I want to know what is recommended! I have Blow and Face:Off with Juelz, and Dedication 2, Lil’ Weeyana, and The Greatest Rapper Alive, but what do I need? Please let me know.
U need SQ4 Shanetron its really early but his word play and metaphors are timeless.
hell of a lot of work for this and I appreciate it
As a man of Jamaican heritage I will state that Lil’ Wayne needs to shut the sh!t with the jafakin’ accent. Dreadlocks and weed smoking do not a Jamaican make. And a done me done talk.
Great article you touch on some of the things that were said in the pervious post.4 mics or not dude got flow.
to echo the point made above, sq4 should be the starting point. that’s when i decided to payin’ attention to little dude.
Lovin the Wayne feedback everyone. As for that new 50 song, anyone else think it sounds like that Magic Stick joint he did with Lil Kim? I’m not feeling it. In response to the comment earlier, I think the laughing hook is stolen from The Roots “Distortion to Static” off of Do You Want More?!?!?! at least that’s my favorite example of a hook with laughing.
I’m not too sure why, but after dedication 2 I started to give Lil’ Wayne more credit. He’s pretty good, but I’m the same way; the classic album standard needs to be met first, before claims of greatness or “best alive.”
Smoking Secion on point once again.
Can we get the same analytical (and shots follow-up) look at Jeezy?
Good column bro. I appreciate all the info and songs you put on here. Ive always been a fan of Lil Wayne ever since his 1st cd and Hot Boys albums. I give credit when its due and he deserves it regardless of the negative press he has received etc. Thanks again
MY GOD DAMN. THANK YOU. WEEEEEEEZY F BABBYYYY
damn…
Let’s face it, Wayne won’t get the respect he deserves, until he’s dead and gone. Then all the dick riders will come out and say how great he was, cause then he’ll be missed. Just like all the other Best Rappers.
It’s hard to consider someone the best because everyone has their favorites. State who you think is the Best Rapper, and I guarantee there will be those that agree with you, and those that laugh at you, no matter who it is.
We will never agree who The best rapper is because we love em today and hate em tomorrow.
is there any way you can compile all of this into one rapid share…i know its guna be like 10gigs but…uhhh…is it possible?
All those mixtapes don’t make him the greatest. Get the fuck out of here with your taste for simplified lyrics and unwarranted arrogance.
Post a whole Lil wayne verse that you think deserves credit for incredible lyricism and mc proficiency.
Wayne’s demeanor and style is wack to me: The tats on the eye lids, self-inflicted gun shot to the abdomen (lame), the foot-in-mouth arrogance, and the dissin of hip hop’s superior pioneers. But, the boy does have some skills in his flow. Them SqadUp mix tapes was his ‘enlightenment’ period. He’s also FINALLY signing some folks to his labels, Kanye’s managment co got his back, and he went back to school. Just keep our eyes open. He may surprise us.
Dirty Harry did you LISTEN to Hollywood Divorce?
Weezy’s swagger is unmatched.
I just wanted to put that out there.
I don’t claim to be a rap expert or anything, but Weezy’s content isn’t near as good as his flow. For every great mixtape he makes (like dedication 1&2), he makes three crappy posse tapes with nothing but dirty rhymes and bling tunes. It’d be better if he’d edit himself more and release less crap. Say what you want about Eminem or Jay being washed up, but they pretty much hold their shit until they got something worth spitting about.
What about wayne earliest verses on BG’Z TRUE STORY (a duo with wayne and BG) A 13 year old wayne rappin and rippin Mystical when the Big Boy/Cash Money beef had Orleans on lock.
Damn I didn’t realize Wayne was this prolific. Dude is nice but he’s not the greatest.
You didn’t put up Nelly Furtado’s Maneater remix? Other than Hollywood Divorce that’s the only Wayne verse that I even like.
Receipt & Shooter cited as legitimate lyricism? Receipt sounds like a fake love letter I’d throw out to get some cut in junior high. Shooter, average gun slingin tale made to sound easygoing for some reason. Georgia Bush, barely a 1/4 thoughtful, the 3/4 past the begining is same ol money talk lmao wtf. I was feeling his verse on Hollywood Divorce and some other shyt, but like the rest of his work its not something I’d tout as ‘up there’ considering its mostly the usual guns money bitches type. Overall his choice of rhyme scheme wording does work smoothly with his style aspect, but his simple metas, corny punchlines & lack of detailed substance arent for me.
Mannn…I forgot all about “Maneater”. It’s P’s fault.
“I’ll be Diddy, you be Mase…”
If Wayne is ‘amazing’ and one of the best out now, all I gotta ask is: Where the fuck have our standards gone?? I mean I respect dude’s hustle I can completely understand why people feel him. I dig his music from time to time and enjoy it without any reservations, but just becasue he makes enjoyable music does not put him on the list of great MC’s. C’mon now, people. I assume that most of you that visit this site know a little more than the normal fan, so we’ve all heard what a great MC sounds like. Wayne does not compare. It doesn’t make him wack or corny, dude’s entertaining, but it definately does not make him great.
propz TSS! Wayne is one of my guilty pleasures…
anyone got that greatest rapper alive v.1?
yo jesse…
this article is CLASSIC.
’nuff said.
TSS IS MAJOR!!!
Lil Wayne – Best of Me

[Lil Wayne]
Somebody tell Fed (Fee Baby) ta halla at me man

My bitches originally from across the border
But once mami cross the border ta my hideaway across the border
She lie across the floor an we toss the whore

I’m mad at ya homie, hotter than pebbles over the stove in the mornin’
And I’m, over the stove in the mornin’ wit’ a boy cookin’ some arm’an hammer

Sign of things to come? Or has Banks and Buck’s failure to completely dominate radio and the charts already done that (Banks is doing ok – Lloyd was one and done = failure)?
That’s a very impressive upload.
Lil’ Wayne has an annoying tone of voice. He raps about really dumb shit. He makes ridiculous boasts about himself and now continually refers to himself as the top MC in the world.
Others have said it better, among them in these comments. But Wayne’s wacker than hell homie. I’m glad you dig his shit, Son is mediocre at best
LMAO@ BADNEWS
fool is corny.
shit. half the records out now are corny.
been that way for the past 5 years and thats a generous estimate.
beats suck nowadays.
lyrics all about “my grind” “my weight”.
shit is played out.
every fucking rapper out now is a carbon copy of someone who was just as corny.
shit has to step up a couple million notches.
I think your article sucks, but I am still going to take a couple minutes to write.
I am a Wayne fan to the core, but I find it hard to show respect for you because your article pretty much shows how you just got on this Wayne tip because you were finally forced to hear him spit. Yeah the song with Outkast is hot, but so is almost every single track on The Carter. I mean take a second to listen to BM Jr., that song is one of the illest. I’m not trying to hate, but you giving out your late comer props is kinda like you admitting that you just jumped on the dick of “The Best Rapper Alive.” I call him the best rapper alive, becuase he is just that. No one else is going as hard as Wayne right now, and no one is putting out as much work as that man. There may be “better” rappers alive, but where the fuck are they, and why are they not doing it?
Glad to hear you’re now a fan in all seriousness, but now that you are a fan, take a minute and do your research. Listen to some of those fire songs that your friend used to always try to get you on. Go back and listen to Wayne on the Hot Boys shit, and realize that he was sick back then, he just had no swagger (which is all Gillie ever said to have given Wayne, not ghostwrite.)
Thanks and have fun.
P.S. Everyone just be a little more patient for da drought 3, it’s coming!
wayne overload! lol
ss is majorly major.
the hollywood divorce finally made me notice him. anyone who can steal the spotlite from dre is worth investigating. now i’ve been checkin out his other stuff. especially after hearing that dedication and carterII are good. his show em whatcha got freestyle is an improvement on the og. dude has his moments for sure. i’m no longer a hater…
I personally have never been (and likely will never be) a fan of Lil’Wayne. Everything about him is a gimmick to me.
But why are people including how much material he’s put out as evidence of him being “the best rapper alive”? Is that even a valid argument? If that’s the case, then maybe Chingy should release some more albums.
Music is about quality; not quantity.
The fact that he DOES put out so much material suggests just the opposite to me.
Not so much that he’s the greatest rapper or the best lyricist with the best material, but that he puts out so much material that he stays in your face. He does it because, in my opinion, he has to.
Not sure if that’s a sign of a good lyricist or good marketing.
I tried to hate for a minute, but then I decided to listen for a second.
You’re absolutely right, you really can not discredit the MC he has become, nor the effort, the energy and even some of his nonsensical freestyles.
. . . yeah he definitely killed it on “Hollywood Divorce.” I was shocked.
Good Looking, I’ll try to grab as much as I can. Thanks!
amazing list, good job with it and thank you kindly. weezys a beast in terms of grinding and while i personally like him i can see where others might not (maybe his voice, maybe if you’re strictly into the concious rappers), but the straight up haters without any reason as to why they hate, whom you mentioned in your article, those people are just sad. the man puts in work constantly and delivers consistently.
Thanks for this mayne…I’ve been looking for alot of this for awhile…major props!
Propz for this. Weezy is a beast in the rap game. LMAO @ all the haters. Lame asses…
“…he just had no swagger (which is all Gillie ever said to have given Wayne, not ghostwrite.)”
Are you serious?
None of us are stupid enough to believe that.
Gillie claims to have given him a lot more than just some “swagger.”
She made you forget about Maneater?
How?
word Moniker, simple pleasures for simple folk i guess

Weezy gone show up atcha f*ckin door ock.
props on this post…thanks for the material
what i don’t understand is, if wayne doesn’t deserve the props he’s worked for, who does? If he’s not the tightest out, who is?
what regions are all theses haters coming from? Because I can understand folks from up North agreeing with a southern rapper as #1, them dudes is usually biased anyway. The same northerners who got wack ass 50 shit thinking he’s hot, it’s okay we know where hip hop started, but credit should be given when it is due. I challenge anyone to name 5 rappers better than weezy.

Say Weezy F Baby!
Li wayne is mos def a slick rapper and whomever used his “best of Me” freestyle as an example of his skill was on point but your lyrics were all wrong. How can u truly appreciate his work if you don’t know what he’s saying.
Just a few corrections (didnt have time for them all)
I got work on every outskirt and
I got her out shirt, out skirt, fam..
Im the boy I said im the boy man
Mommy can’t avoid cuz my air on Jordan’s (23’s)
And can’t lie ,cuz I glide on clyde’s (22’s)
When she try to ride wit me cuz I sky on Dominque’s (21’s)
She not hating cuz I rip on G Paytons (20’s)
But she love to ride the back of my 4 wheeler on Dayton’s
We playas but we really dont play
like Joseph Forte, got doja all day
Those line were hot cuz he was calling out NBA legends to describe his rim size. If you listen closely he actually calls out the numbers after each line (23’s, 22’s, 21’s , 20’s)
Secondly The Joseph Forte line is about a UNC freshman phenom that didnt quite develop in the league, hence we playas but we really dont play….
PLEASE, PLEASE CAN SOMEONE PROVIDE THE LINK TO DA DROUGHT 3!!! I NEED IT DESPARATELY AND I NEED TO KNOW HOW TO CONVERT THESE .RAR FILES TO FILES MY COMPUTER CAN ACTUALLY PLAY>>>>PLEASE HELP!!
T.I. > Lil Wayne
Ludacris > Lil Wayne
Chamillionaire > Lil Wayne
can’t be the best rapper alive if you aren’t up to par with your contemporaries. or can you? the rap game has changed, gimmicks, biting, men kissing men and etc. Alot of things that get a pass now in hip-hop would NEVER have flown in 97′. but then again i might just be old.
thanks

I found this article to be quite interesting. While I definitely do not believe that he is the best rapper alive by any stretch of the imagination, i will admit that he is quite entertaining and flows well in many instances.
I didn’t realize how popular his music was even in Jamaica (where i’m from) until he performed in the island recently. He did a fabulous job of entertainng the crowd and was very well received.
Even for those who judge artistes based on perceived personality, it’s hard to hate Wayne, (unless you’re very traditional or closed minded)because he has a little charisma.
