KISS’ Gene Simmons says hip-hop needs to “step up or die.”
Credit where credit is due – Valid points made and ill business mind for sure. But does he know enough about hip-hop to correctly address it? Some of his statements seemed to generalize a tad too much.
Young Buck & God = B.F.F.s? Well according to Buck, it’s true. Who am I to judge?
The Joe Budden Conspiracy. I didn’t read it all but someone told me I should. I have enough sense to know that Mood Muzik 3 better drop and then be followed by a superb album or Budden is going to float into obscurity. Somebody can Cliff Note me on the article.
Obama paid his parking tickets…17 years later. And the funny part is, it’s news. I’m telling you this next election is going to swarm the the tv and ‘net.
Finally, HipHopDX.com tells us of the 5 Things That Killed Hip-Hop. Add in “microwave music” for these one-hit single artists and their lack of development courtesy of the labels. Then factor in the fact that there’s more rappers than fans & they’ve got some pretty solid points.

Im officially on Devin the Dude watch. As soon as that album leaks somebody needs to put it up.
Run that new Sterling Simms…
Watch him blow rnb open…
“I’m telling you this next election is going to swarm the the tv and ‘net.”
Every election already does that.
Seriously.
“Actually no, that’s not Harvard. I’m talking about somebody who can cross-collateralize and fiduciary duty along with the best of them…”
While he has a point… Gene (with whom I respect), does not have enough knowledge of Hip-Hop to understand that (just as rock) at this point… it will NOT die… it will simply evolve (it will NOT die). Money, hoes, ice, and clothes… the only difference is that someone will always just come up with a fresh and innovative way to say it – initially at least (Kanye circa College Dropout anyone?).
I mean, basically what Gene is doing is generalizing rappers/emcees as all being thugged out and “dummies.” And that simply comes from not knowing enough about the genre to speak on it (the Sean Paul reference proves this). It’s like me giving a synopsis of World Music and why it isn’t at the forefront of genres along with rock, Hip-Hop, and country. It would be ridiculous of me to do so because while I know about World Music and have heard it… I do not know enough about it to make general statements about it or those who create it.
Funny thing is, Gene is the ultimate businessman… but Jay probably is comparable to him in that sense (even though he, Gene, probably would refute that claim)… net worth included. So I think someone needs to remind him of that and the fact that what he proposed as the “quintessential” Gene Simmons “savior of Hip-Hop” rapper…
Would certainly be laughed out of the room and the dude would go wood.
And what good would that do? (I mean… seriously?)
Is that the TR-808 in that pic too?
(What you youngins know about that?)
Yo! The Budden article is crazy. I think some of that stuff was obviously exaggerated to make it more humorous (on some ESPN.com pg. 2 ish), but if thats how things really went down, that’s wild. I kinda feel bad for Joey. I loved that “Focus” when it first dropped.
1. I feel like a lot of that Budden article was a little off base, Jay feeling threatened enough by Budden to continue to keep him down? I doubt that.
2. Gene Simmons came off as really presumptuous and out of date about rap with all of that ‘wassup’ shit. He’s trying to tell us how to cross-market rap so that it appeals to strokes like himself. A rapper that talks like white people better than white people? Why?
I’m a white guy and that doesn’t sound appealing to me, lol.
3. That Eve joint from earlier in the day – worst song I’ve heard all year. wtf.
That was an entertaining post though, thanks Gotty.
What the… Gene Simmons doesn’t have the right!

i agree with GENE SIMMONS hip hop needs to step UP…
@boogie tonight
The premise is right but it is certainly coming from the wrong source. That to me is the equivalent of a certain “leader” telling a certain people how to feel about a certain handling of a certain “hurricane.”
*Big bro might be watching.
Good lookin’ on that Budden article. I too feel like bits of it were exaggerated, I can’t quite picture Hova shitting his pants and running around like a chicken with his head chopped off as they seemed to be describing him, I also don’t believe he’s the only serious factor holding back the release of “The Growth”, but everything I read there checks out with what I’ve heard along the way, so it’s nice to have it all summarized. Regardless, Budden needs to come out eventually, whether he’ll soar sales wise is another story. “Body Hot” would’ve been a smash single.
Didn’t even see the Budden link… just didn’t interest me I suppose.
Budden may be a good lyricist (matter of opinion), but he’ll never blow like that. Anyway… started reading the article then clicked the red x in the upper right hand corner of my browser. Why you ask? Because all of the attempts at the author being funny were unnecessary and made me stop reading.
If he or she wanted to get the story out there… I could have personally done without all of the “disses.” Yeah, we all know Just is into Sci-Fi and Star Wars type ish… and that Clue is short.
And?
I don’t know if others did the same (stopped reading), but hopefully whomever wrote it will learn from that next time. Maybe when I’m completely bored I’ll go back and give it another try but… I don’t see myself ever becoming that bored (see, I have a sense of humor too).
would it have mattered if someone of color had said what GENE SIMMONS said? No I dont think so… KISS has been around for years and can still sell out at arena… who in HIP HOP can do that right now besides the usual supsects? GENE hit it on the head its all about Merchandising and Licensing… KISS rakes in the dough doing that without having a hit on the charts… KISS BACK CATALOG sells
@boogie tonight
You are making absolutely no sense.
What does merchandising and licensing have to do with his other statements about what Hip-Hop needs by way of artists?
I do not think anyone (certainly not myself) was refuting his business acumen.
But I have yet to hear your side on what he said as far as Hip-Hop needing someone, “…who can cross-collateralize and fiduciary duty along with the best of them, who can speak White language better than the White man and do it to music.
Like I said, I respect Gene (for whatever reason, it seems as if you are unaware that there are people who are both KISS AND Hip-Hop fans)… but that specific part of his analogy is terribly off.

The greatest that ever done it.
Gotty.
Where you get that flick.
Its the essence of what I heart about hippety hop.
Yeah Gene was right about hip-hop needed to pick itself up but all the legends of hip-hop have been saying that for a minute now; an outsider has no place saying that, rock isn’t in great shape either.
