Nas Week continues on…
It’s the summer of 1994. I’m fresh off my first year in a public high school with no scratches after going to catholic schools for most of my life. I had gotten into a tight love affair with St.Ides. One of the things that me and my peoples loved doing was getting a radio and playing whatever as hot at that time while chiefing and poppin’ bottle tops. A result of this was always the chief debate over which albums were better. This time, we were all arguing over what the song of the summer was. It came down to the Luniz’ “I Got Five On It” and Nas’ “Memory Lane“. Now I had bumped this song and the rest of Illmatic constantly since I got my tape. But to sit and actually analyze this track was something else. My boy Patrick asked me, excited and with Heineken in hand, “Chris, what song you pickin’?” “Memory Lane, man.” I said without any hesitation. And in the end, that was the song that marked that summer above all else.In its essence, the song is pure nostalgia. The beat is laid back seventies soul, not unlike what your parents used to blast at their parties. Premier’s production on this track is simply flawless; a simple but energetic bassline with key samples of Biz Markie scratched in among some soothing vocals in the hands of another producer may not have come out this smooth. And you could name only about two other producers who had the skills to try at this point, arguably.
Nas reveals his gift for image-laden storytelling on Illmatic’s other joints, but here he really shows his depth and boasts some verbal dexterity. How else could you explain this:
“I rap divine God/check the prognosis is it real or showbiz/my window faces shootouts/drug overdoses/live amongst no roses only the drama/for real a nickel plate is my fate/my medicine is the ganja..”
Think about it this way…Big Pun, another adept lyricist cited this track as one of his inspirations on how to write. Nas essentially crammed four different lines of thought into a couple of bars. And did it in a conversational tone. For a sixteen year old cat who was into heavy reading, it beat whatever Shakespeare put to page.
“Memory Lane” is a song that while it details life in the streets, it does so with a laid back feeling. You hear it all and breathe easy, feeling like you’re in the eye of the storm. You’ve got time to reflect. Build with your people. Drink a brew and reminisce. For me, that’s what this song still holds for me. Summertime, memories of great moments on the block and promises of more memories to come despite the challenges.
Note…
“Memory Lane” was produced by DJ Premier, arguably Nas’ best match in terms of production. When Premo laces Nas, it’s usually a heavy piano driven beat with the perfect sample to supplement both the beat and Nas’ lyrics.
With that in mind, we put together a few other tracks produced by Premo.
‘NY State Of Mind‘ and ‘Represent‘ from Illmatic.
‘Nas Is Like‘ from I Am.
‘2nd Childhood‘ from Stillmatic.
Add on by naming other Premo-produced Nas tracks that stand out to you & tell us why.

I Gave You Power
Even though Organized Konfusion had already used the same concept on Stray Bullet, Nas gave it a more melancholy appeal, you can feel the regret and remorse on lines like “My creation was for blacks to kill blacks” and “sick of the murders, sick of the blood” and of course the end “now I’m happy, till I feel somebody else grab me…damm”
2nd childhood is one of my favorite nas tracks.
i have a cousin just like the chick he describes.
I agree with d stapes I think 2nd childhood is a great song as well. Nas is a great storyteller and utilizes thoughts about kinfolk that we all have.
Yo…we’ve got a WEEK of Nas. Give us a chance b/c I know Preach has a piece on 2nd Childhood already baked and in the oven.
When I first heard “Nas is like” i was like damnnnn…Nas is back on that illmatic vibe…then I heard “Hate me now” and shed a tear for what could have been
did premo do ny state of mind part 2? nas’ rhyme game isnt up like part 1, but im feelin the beat.
life is paralleL to L but i must …

Yes, NY State of mind II was produced by DJ Premier
^ That mediafire link is Amy Winehouse – Frank
Checking my liner notes, “Get Down” was produced by Nas and Salaam Remi
I love Nas Is Like, just the topics he talks about, and the sample, is just unique. “I’m like a million races combined in one man.”
yeah, i agree with John, I gave you power is classic too. “always, I’m in some shit…”
NY pt. 2 had a nice last verse. lol, hate me now wasnt that bad, to me. but maybe you don’t like Puff’s adlibs ,lol.
yeah, 2nd childhood is one of my favorite Stillmatic songs. I like how Preemo strayed from his usual style of beats for Nas, and still made a great beat. the Peabo Bryson original is nice too.
I feel like Hip Hop is Dead was missing one Preemo track. but at least they linked up for the Nike song , hopefully the next Nas album has premier
i dont get the AW bandwagon…
i forgot, “Come Get Me” was classic. i like how preem used the sample “..I’ve invited America’s foremost poet.” …”Who ill as me? I wil’ed on haters on album3/next level, I take y’all to 3D”
Memory Lane is my favorite track period so thats my choice for sure. But a week of Nas are you serious? What a way to start this beginning of spring/summer.
A – if not, why not lol? It’s all in fun really.
i have a hard time choosing between “NY state of mind pt. II”, “i gave you power”, and “memory lane” … but it would have to be “memory lane.” one of the first songs that made me feel like words and music actually meshed (didn’t even know preemo did it ’til a year later). the pinnacle of illmatic, for real.
The scratches and the sample used on “Come Get Me” were just so raw, and I pretty sure that was the only song on Nastradamus where Nas actually comes hard. Nas & Preme killed it on that one.
Your writing is mad good Chris. Respect.

“When I first heard “Nas is like” i was like damnnnn…Nas is back on that illmatic vibe…then I heard “Hate me now” and shed a tear for what could have been”
too true! couldn’t have put it better…
Nas is Like is one of my alltime favourite Primo beats, and the lyrics are off the chain.. “much success to ya, even if you wish me the opposite./sooner or later we’ll all see who the prophet is”
Chris,
This was a perfect piece of writing. You sum up everything great about this track and why it is so incredible. I’m really impressed with this site and the way you guys write about music. I would have to say Represent for my other Nas/Premier collabo. I think maybe because the beat isn’t really distinctly “Classic Premier” in style and composition, but it’s still classic. The hook on that song is just bangin too.
Drew, good lookin’ out. Comin’ from you, I know that’s real.
Memory lane is hot but… One Love was that slick shit 4real kid. “I had to school him, told him don’t let niggaz fool him, cause when the pistol blows the one thats murdered be the cool one…”
Classic Nasty Nas
(Sigh) back in the days when rap was worth listenin to…
