5 new tracks from UGK’s upcoming double album, Return Of The Underground Kingz (Jive/Zomba), to stream. Some you may have heard, other maybe not. Either the way, the time apart doesn’t seem to have affected their chemistry together. The astounding thing is that this duo has been putting out successful music for well over a decade by sticking to the same script, a la Short Dog.
“Player’s Anthem” samples my favorite track Willie Hutch track from The Mack, but since Pat did it I really didn’t want to see anyone else from the 3-6 camp touchin it. Luckily Bun gets low on it. “Stop-N-Go” & “The Game…” sound like the complimentary trunk rattlers. The track with Willie D feels good because on one track you have three cats who laid the groundwork for making the South relevant. All worth a listen.

Yo, I don’t know if you checked it out Gotty, but you GOTTA hear Cam airing out 50 on Hot 97 earlier today about record sales…. Hilarious…
“Currrr-tiiiisss??? How much did Mobb sell??”

did the album really get pushed back to april?
I don’t want to speculate on exactly how far it got pushed back but I’m sure it’s going to be another month or two at least.
Damn, why are cats getting beats still from Jazzy Pha? He hasnt made anything good since “Aww Naw” from the Nappy Roots.
Look UGK has been getting it from Jive with no vaseline for sometime, this was to be expected…
DJ Shad. That was lovely….LMAO….
I fucking hate jive.
I don’t get why they keep getting recycled beats, Still Ridin’ Dirty was on the intro of the Fix and the player’s anthem was on layin the smack down…
The best group in hip-hop right now deserves better than recycled beats.
I co-sign the jazzy pha coment, UGK sounds best over pimp c production without a doubt.
They’re pickin’ the beats. So the blame should go to them. I don’t expect no mind food from anyone below Maryland unless their names are Big Boi and Andre 3000 so an album full of infectious bangers are good enough for UGK….
“Like That” is a waste of time on everybody who was involved part. The double album plague seems to strike again…
And ya’ll said “Life After Death” was bubblegum????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
Ciara’s ‘Get Up’ was straight fire.
Ya’ll don’t even front. JazzE Pha (With an ‘e’) is hit and miss…
But when he’s on… he makes some dope.
UGK has made plenty of introspective (“mind food”) songs. Just because they spit about drugs, bitches, and caddies on the more popular songs doesn’t mean they can’t drop some concious-minded shit (and come off sounding more sincere than most rappers).
One Day, Dirty Money, Hi-Life, Cocaine (at least Bun’s verse), all those joints are beyond mere bangers.
And even though the majority of their catalog is just shit-talking with solid beats….they’re better at making that than anybody else.
^ True. I can easily point to “One Day” and Bun’s verse on “End Of The Road” as two tracks that will make you stop and appreciate the things you’ve got.
Better than anyone else? They’d have to get in line behind Pac, Face, and Cube before I’d give them such boisterous acknowledgement…
I mean, my statement is completely subjective. They’re my favorite group after Wu. I’m not quite sure if there’s any concrete way to go about discerning who the best at that would be.
