Yeah, we’ve been slacking on our real review game of sorts. Personally, i’ve been busy. Between a job, two girlfriends (my girl got a girlfriend – Dro), chasing the almight dollar…let’s just say it gets hard to listen, review and write all the time.

This week though, I’m going to point out a few albums and artists that I’ve been meaning to touch on for a minute. If you like or dislike, feel free to comment. If you know something in the same vein of the music presented, feel free to post it in the comments as well or shoot it to us via email and we’ll take a listen to it.

“…much is expected

A few cats have steadily been buzzing in my ear since summer to give these cats a listen but I’ve been hesitant…because these niggas just look different.

And I was correct. These dudes are different.

-You’ve been listening to them for years without knowing it, as they’ve produced, managed, had a hand in…or somehow someway they were involved with artists like Common, Jill Scott, Bilal, Erykah Badu, Pharoahe Monch, Heavy D, etc etc…

-They’re signed to Kanye’s G.O.O.D. Music label (www.goodmusicnet.com)

-I’m pretty sure this particular album has been scrapped by all accounts so in a few years you’ll be glad you had the chance to obtain these few tracks.

- The album starts out and you immediately think “I ain’t gonna like this shit.” But if you hang around, you’ll figure out either a.) these dudes are ahead of you or b.) the instrumentation and production are stellar. If you’re one of those people who loves “sounds” (Are you high?), you should be able to rock with this.

- Admist all the musical melody/confusion, there’s a hint of a message mixed in the music, even though the lyrics seem lofty and over the top. Subjects include bitches, big money blunts, bright lights, coke, prostitution, porn stars, and other assertions of fly shit, all told from their insider perspective.

- This is the progression of funk in music from Funkadelic to Prince to here and now. This is the more precise sounding version of what Andre 3000 prolly heard in his head when he was making The Love Below.

In the end, you’ll either walk away pleased that you found something new and replay it quite a few times or feeling dizzy & touchy feely like you’ve been poppin pills.

Standout tracks

“Starwarz”

The liftoff…if you can find your way into this lush groove, you’re on your way. Laidback crooning + an adapt assessment of the glamourous life, word to Sheila E.

“Big Fame”

Up up and away she goes/the bitch couldn’t handle big fame you know…

Heavy guitar licks and bassline. Thumbs up.

“Hollywood”

Lovin it. Automatic ridin material as you stroll to the club.
It’s definitely not for everybody. The music is the key here. If you think too hard, you might miss the point. The point being that the zone and groove on this shit is all contained in the vibe created. Heavy funk + heavy bass + a touch of R&B stylings make it enjoyable.
