In an attempt to save a sinking ship (word to Rocafella) and more than a few disparaging rumors, Baby the Birdman and Lil Wayne dropped Like Father Like Son on the hip-hop world.

With appearances from Rick Ross, Joey Crack, and Tha Dogg Pound, it’s clear that Cash Money is going for that dope talk. So don’t look for any massive amount of depth on this album. Bitches, blunts, and bling round out the majority of the songs.

For what it is, Like Father Like Son ain’t half bad. Aside from the cliche mafioso intro/interludes/outro, Wayne holds it down on tracks, switching up flows to ride the beats. And Baby, well, at times it seems like he’s just filler with elementary rhyme schemes and hustling stories. What Baby does add is that old Cash Money feel to the album, with the playful back and forth, “who’s up next” feel. Plus, allowing him time on the mic gives listeners a chance to digest what Weezy just blessed them with.

Although I think the constant “daddy” references and “Weezy Fucking Baby” alter ego is more than a bit suspect, “Stuntin Like My Daddy” is a showcase of what Cash Money built its empire on – being hood rich millionaires and spending it while they still got it. Can’t fault them for that.

Songs like “Know What Im Doing“, “Army Gunz” and “1st Key” show exactly why you were down with Cash Money to begin with – tracks that entertain with lyrics about hood living and hustling heavy with minimal social commentary. The production is solid, with some joints sounding like The Runners, giving it a southern feel. Organs, snare, and bass heavy beats bump throughout the album, making it a worthy album to cop.

Don’t expect a classic. Do expect characteristic Cash Money charisma and bump.
