I tried homie.

I know things have changed and we can’t be leaking shit of cats we’ve done Sessions with or hope to do them with.

We got @ your people. Various people. We wanted to feature you before this joint dropped.

They didn’t reply like it was a possibility.

That would’ve been good, in my opinion, to keep your name poppin.

But since that didn’t happen, and I like the shit you’re puttin out right now…this is the best way we know to share the knowledge that we have that you’re one of the meanest in the South and let the nonbelievers know.

Killer Mike – I Pledge Allegiance To The Grind (2CD)

The “motivational tape…something to ride to…underground album…bootleg album…this is not a mixtape” didn’t dissapoint. From “Comin Home Atlanta” to the end, I was cool with it. I was worried at first because a.) alot of the material has been floating around and b.) two discs is always a risky venture.

Thankfully, the earlier shit that’s been floating around was included – “Juggernaut,” “That’s Life,” and “I Will Not Lose.” And in the context of the two discs, they fit right in because the same tenacity displayed on those is the same displayed throughout the album.

New material that stood out…

“I’ma Shine”…it was good on the sampler and the full version was even better.

“H.N.I.C.”…the horns…just the horns…put me in the mind of some Pete Rock shit with a pulsating bassline that constantly moves forward similar to The Bomb Squad’s work (remember them?).

“Gat Totin”…the team held their own over the bass.

“You Don’t Want This Life”…Probably one of the better tracks on the album, it’s a personal take on the trap before the glamour and glitz…”…I am dead fresh/came to school, got the news/that my homie, Woo, was killed/dude murdered for his shoes/it was childish, but look how we remembered you/came to the funeral in the same tennis shoes/too young and innocent to see that our act of defiance/caused your mother further stress and crying…”

That’s the beauty of Mike’s content. He speaks with from the vein of that dude who hustled, held down a block or two in his time…left the game with same paper, opened up a few detail shops or a construction company…and daily sat back, holding court tellin stories, some funny, some harsh, trying to get cats to see the dark shadows that are created by the bright lights.

“The Next Bitch”…decent interpretation of the rap game/crack game story.

“Dueces Wild”…the Three Dog Night sample wins with the usual precise storytelling lyrics that we’ve grown accustomed to you kickin. A tale of a robbery gone wrong, Mike manages to do here what he does on alot of tracks – exxagerate just a little like “nahhh you didn’t do that homie” but it’s not so far-fetched that you couldn’t picture it going down, so you laugh.

Ahh…fuck it yo. No need to say anymore. The shit didn’t let down.

Appreciate that homie. Music’s been lacking and I’ve been saying for months this was gonna be a solid joint.T

hanks for making me look smart.

Get @ us for a Session.

Sincerely,

Gottyâ„¢
